Kasama and Mashiko: A Week to Experience Your Ideal Craft Village in Tokyo
Mashiko Town in Tochigi Prefecture is renowned as a production center for Mashiko ware, with roots stretching back to the Edo period, and as the base of artist Shoji Hamada, a leading figure in the Mingei movement. Kasama City in Ibaraki Prefecture is known as another major pottery production area alongside Mashiko. An event, "GO KASAMASHIKO via TOKYO: To Your Ideal Craft Village - The Charms of Kasama and Mashiko -," will be held to introduce and experience the allure of these two towns, known as villages of pottery.

Main Venue: Hikarie 8/COURT, Shibuya
The two towns, Kasama and Mashiko, are blessed with scenic beauty and a culture that nurtures creativity. In recent years, a strong sense of community and collaboration has emerged, particularly among younger artisans, leading to various events. This event represents a culmination of those efforts, brought to Tokyo.
At Hikarie 8/COURT in Shibuya, the main venue for "GO KASAMASHIKO via TOKYO," over 40 ceramic artists will showcase their works in an exhibition and sale. Additionally, popular flower stylists will host a five-day "Flower and Pottery Workshop," using custom-made vases commissioned from Kasama and Mashiko artisans.
Furthermore, satellite venues will include TODAY’S SPECIAL Jiyugaoka, Shibuya, and Kyoto stores; Utsuwa Kaede (Minami-Aoyama); shizen (Jingumae); Kagure Omotesando (Jingumae); BEAMS JAPAN 5F fennica STUDIO (Shinjuku); and Playmountain (Sendagaya). Each location will host sales events curated to highlight the unique charms of Kasama and Mashiko from their respective perspectives.
