George Nakashima, born in Washington in 1905, was a renowned furniture designer and architect. After studying at the University of Washington, Yale University Graduate School, and MIT, he began his career as an architectural designer. In 1934, he came to Japan and worked alongside Kunio Maekawa and Junzo Yoshimura under Antonin Raymond. He eventually forged his own path as a woodworker. His pieces are housed in institutions such as the Smithsonian Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and in Japan, the National Museum of Modern Art, Crafts and Design, and the Kōshō Kakōkan in Takamatsu. As a globally recognized wood furniture artist, he continues to profoundly influence contemporary designers.
Nakashima's early masterpiece, the "Grasshopper Chair," is being revived after half a century. Utilizing Indian rosewood, the same material used originally and now difficult to source, this limited edition is exceptionally rare. The collaboration between Sakura Seisakusho's craftsmanship and LICHT's refined space presents a unique and precious opportunity. The exhibition runs until August 1st (Sunday).
