Prouvé's Ingenuity, Born from Adversity
Reissued by Vitra for the first time, Jean Prouvé's "Chaise Tout Bois" (All-Wood Chair), conceived during wartime metal shortages, will be available in Japan from September 2020.
Text by Satsuki Wakabayashi
Jean Prouvé believed in shaping form through his own hands, preferring the title of "constructor" over architect or designer.
During World War II, one solution to the metal shortage was the all-wood chair, "Chaise Tout Bois."
For this reissue, the dimensions and seat height have been adjusted for contemporary living, but the 1941 design, which uses no screws, and the structure supporting the entire load with its rear legs, remain unchanged.
Crafted from sustainable wood, this chair, embodying innovation and creativity in overcoming difficult circumstances, is fittingly revived in 2020.
