Introducing the "vertebra03" work chair, transcending the boundaries of work and life. Making Japanese work more flexible | ITOKI
In 1981, ITOKI launched the "Vertebra." Derived from the Latin word for "spine," this work chair was designed with the concept of a "human-centered office chair." It incorporated advanced functions based on ergonomics and biomechanics, successfully bringing comfort and design to Japanese offices where gray vinyl-covered work chairs were the norm. Thirty-eight years after the debut of the first model, and with product designer Fumie Shibata at the helm, the "vertebra03" is set to be unveiled this autumn. In an era where lifestyles have diversified over 38 years, what kind of office furniture is now required?

Rich Variations to Suit Your Work and Life
ITOKI's "Vertebra" work chair was born in 1981 through a collaboration between world-renowned designer Emilio Ambasz, his partner at the time, and Dutch company Open Ark.
Featuring an innovative backrest that flexibly supports the spine according to body movement and a seat with a forward-tilt function, its advanced ergonomic and biomechanical features were revolutionary for Japanese offices at the time, earning it enduring popularity.
Today, in what is called the "100-year life era," people's work styles have diversified, and the roles and functions of offices are also evolving.
For instance, while the term "work-life balance" is widely discussed, some are beginning to seek harmony by intentionally blurring the lines between work and life. To respond to these shifts in work environments and mindsets, ITOKI, with product designer Fumie Shibata, re-examined the very essence of office furniture.
This led to the creation of the "vertebra03" work chair. The goal was to develop office furniture that transcends "work" and "life," catering to the flexible work styles of the future. With its comfortable functionality and sleek design that also allows for relaxation, it undoubtedly marks a departure from conventional products.
Its advanced features have also been updated for enhanced comfort.
Key innovations include a backrest recline function that supports a backward-leaning posture and allows for lumbar stretching, a seat slide function that naturally guides the user into a correct sitting posture, a seat forward-tilt function to reduce thigh pressure during desk work, and a seat height adjustment dial. These intricate mechanisms ensure the back and seat move in harmony, providing gentle support for the body in any posture.
Beyond functionality and design, its high degree of customizability to match work styles and spaces is another significant appeal.
Available in four matte body colors and three base types, the "vertebra03" offers a total of 28 fabric options, including the original type and a high-grade selection from "Knoll Textiles," favored by many architects and designers. The "vertebra03," customizable to diverse lifestyles, promises to make every day more enjoyable and comfortable, bridging the gap between work and life.
