Reproducing the Original Specifications in Every Detail
Sixty years have passed since the "Butterfly Stool," a representative Japanese furniture piece, was born. Fifty years have passed since the "Heron Rocking Chair," a culmination of molded plywood technology, was created. These are masterpieces that continue to be loved even after more than half a century.
To commemorate the 60th and 50th anniversaries of these pieces, Tendo Mokko is releasing a limited edition series that faithfully reproduces their original specifications.
The "Butterfly Stool" was first presented at the Sori Yanagi Industrial Design Research Group exhibition held at Matsuya Ginza in 1956. To this day, it has been selected for the permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Louvre Museum.
The encounter between Sori Yanagi, who witnessed Eames's molded plywood technology after the war, and Masahiro Sanuki, who was researching molded plywood at the Industrial Arts Institute in Sendai at the time and later joined Tendo Mokko, led to the creation of this beautiful stool.
This limited edition model uses Indian rosewood, which was used at the time of its release. Indian rosewood, known for its distinct grain, is now a rare and extremely difficult material to obtain.
Furthermore, a special coating has been applied to enhance the characteristic purplish, deep grain of Indian rosewood.
Additionally, the recreated "Tendo Mokko emblem" used in the 1960s has been incorporated, with careful attention paid to every detail to evoke the original atmosphere.
Meanwhile, the "Heron Rocking Chair" debuted in 1966 as part of an upholstery furniture series designed for living rooms. It was named "Heron" after its single-leg, crane-like stance.
The design was handled by Mitsumasa Sugasawa, an in-house designer at Tendo Mokko. The molded plywood construction utilized a groundbreaking technique at the time called "Koma-ire molding," which achieved a seamless single leg.
The 50th-anniversary model features stitching on the upholstery that matches the original specifications. Compared to the current model, the stitch spacing is shorter, lending a classic feel. Upholstery options are available, allowing for personal selection.
The wood used is oak, the same as originally employed. Its charm lies in its ability to deepen into a rich, amber hue over time, much like aged whiskey.
These two pieces of furniture, born from beautiful design and Tendo Mokko's exceptional craftsmanship, invite you to acquire the essence of these celebrated products. Why not take this opportunity to own a piece of design history?
