KIDILL (キディル) recently concluded their third successful show in Paris. After moving to the UK in 2002, designer Hiromi Sueyasu began making clothes independently and launched his own brand, "HIRO," in 2004.

Rebranded and relaunched in 2014, KIDILL creates clothing for a new generation of rebels with a contemporary spirit, drawing inspiration from the cultures Sueyasu experienced in the 90s, such as London punk, hardcore punk, post-punk, and grunge.

To commemorate the release of "BE@RBRICK KIDILL × ERI WAKIYAMA BAT & ROSE 100％ & 400％ Pink/White," we conducted an email interview with Hiromi Sueyasu, who was in Paris at the time.

For the KIDILL 2020SS collection, an official collaboration with PETER MURPHY, the vocalist of the British band BAUHAUS, was realized. Could you share your thoughts on this first?

I've been a fan of BAUHAUS, so everything about interacting with PETER MURPHY was a joy. Photographer SHEILA ROCK introduced me to Peter, which led to this collaboration. Peter had also seen past KIDILL works and liked them.

Could you tell us which BAUHAUS songs particularly inspired you?

"Bela Lugosi’s Dead," which we also used for the show's music, and "Ziggy Stardust." BAUHAUS is simply the best.

Could you explain how you came to ask the New York-based Japanese illustrator ERI WAKIYAMA to design the icon symbolizing KIDILL 2020SS?

I simply love the world ERI creates. I also think our tastes are very similar. She's such a wonderful person, and I've always wanted to work with her! Every time we meet, she's so kind, and I truly trust and like her. My first encounter with ERI was when she visited an exhibition as a buyer for DOVER STREET MARKET NEW YORK.

What are your thoughts on the BAT & ROSE design, which was also featured in "BE@RBRICK KIDILL × ERI WAKIYAMA BAT & ROSE 100％ & 400％ Pink/White"?

I think ERI has beautifully expressed the world of BAUHAUS. It has a touch of darkness, yet it's a cute and endearing design.

Lastly, could you tell us if there's anything you'd like to do with BE@RBRICK in the future?

I'd like to create new and exciting things with MEDICOM TOY, based on KIDILL's collections. KIDILL 20AW is a collaboration with JAMIE REID. Jamie himself said that the show KIDILL held in Paris was the best collaboration! I've also become close with DENNIS MORRIS on a family level, so we have a really good relationship. I'm also in frequent contact with SHEILA ROCK, and we talk about punk culture. It's truly enjoyable to work with legends who experienced the authentic punk era. After all, I'm a fan of theirs, so it's a fantastic experience. My work still stems from my passions, and I believe we can create wonderful things with MEDICOM TOY.

Previously, KIDILL has themed collections around British rock bands PUBLIC IMAGE LTD., THE DAMNED, and SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES, stemming from their interactions with legendary photographers DENNIS MORRIS and SHEILA ROCK. For the upcoming 2020AW season, a collaboration with JAMIE REID, an artist globally renowned for his work spanning over half a century, including the artwork for the SEX PISTOLS in the 1970s, is realized. KIDILL's movements are certainly worth keeping an eye on.
