All MUJI stores to switch from plastic shopping bags, straws, and other plastic materials to renewable alternatives

As part of its ongoing initiatives to promote the circular economy and reduce waste, MUJI announced it would gradually phase out plastic shopping bags starting March 2020. By the end of June 2020, all stores are scheduled to switch to paper shopping bags exclusively. For larger items or bulk purchases, reusable polypropylene bags will be available in three sizes for ¥150 (tax included), and can be returned to any MUJI store for a refund if no longer needed.

Aiming for a better relationship with the natural environment, plastic materials are being replaced with alternatives like recycled paper

Since its inception in 1980, MUJI has continued its manufacturing philosophy based on three principles: "Selection of Materials," "Review of Processes," and "Simplification of Packaging." The brand has offered essential items produced with minimal waste, using materials that consider the environment and producers, and have always adhered to minimal packaging, with only labels indicating their origin.
While MUJI has previously used take-away packaging and bags suited to its product range, the company has re-evaluated the types and materials of shopping bags to align with its current offerings, deciding to phase out plastic shopping bags from March 2020.
By June 2020, all stores will offer free paper shopping bags in four sizes. For larger items or bulk purchases, three sizes of reusable polypropylene bags will be sold for ¥150 (tax included). These bags can be returned to any MUJI store nationwide if no longer needed.
Furthermore, to encourage the use of personal bags, MUJI has been awarding 530 (gomi zero - zero waste) miles to MUJI passport members who decline a plastic bag at checkout since June 2019. In addition, the brand offers a variety of bags, including the "Jute My Bag" made from fast-growing, rapidly renewable jute, available for purchase to suit individual needs.
In pursuit of circularity and waste reduction, MUJI is also progressively reviewing the materials used for packaging and in-store display materials beyond shopping bags. For example, display hooks for socks and scarves, typically made of plastic, were switched to recycled paper in Spring/Summer 2019. Moving forward, the company plans to identify all items requiring packaging, such as underwear and aromatherapy oils, and transition them from current plastic-based packaging to alternatives like recycled paper wherever possible. Additionally, starting February 2020, straws provided at Café & Meal MUJI will be gradually replaced with ones made from bamboo fiber, a natural material that is 100% biodegradable and more water-resistant than paper, ensuring a comparable drinking experience.
