Andy Warhol's Late Series "The Last Supper" Reimagined as BE@RBRICK
Text by SHINNO Kunihiko | Edit by KAWASE Takuro
Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is once again drawing attention, following the major retrospective "Andy Warhol - From A to B and Back Again" held at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York from November last year to March this year, his first large-scale exhibition since 1989.
After achieving success as a commercial illustrator in the 1950s, he transitioned to the fine art world in 1960. He successively released works inspired by Campbell's Soup cans, dollar bills, and the portrait of Marilyn Monroe, the popular actress who passed away suddenly in 1962, becoming a central figure in the Pop Art movement. Furthermore, he broke new ground in various fields, including producing over 60 films, founding "Interview" magazine, and producing the rock band The Velvet Underground.
One of his recurring themes was "death and disaster," and he chose subjects such as photographs of traffic accidents, electric chairs for executions, and skulls. These were sublimated into religious motifs in the "The Last Supper" series. He created over 100 variations of silkscreen prints based on Leonardo da Vinci's iconic painting of the same name (completed in 1498), and 22 of these were exhibited in 1986 in a space opposite the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, where the original "Last Supper" is displayed.
The "BE@RBRICK ANDY WARHOL 'The Last Supper'" introduced here is a model that beautifully reproduces Warhol's late masterpiece using water printing. What did he see in da Vinci's religious painting, created 500 years prior? This is an artistic BE@RBRICK that invites enjoyable contemplation.
