A Tour of the Tide Exhibition & Tide Market

DESIGNTIDE TOKYO 2012 is underway until Sunday, November 4th, centered at Tokyo Midtown Hall. The Tide Exhibition and Tide Focus, Tide Market held at the main venue, and this year's expanded Tide Table, all offer the most authentic experience of DESIGNTIDE's aim: a space for trading ideas.

An Eighth Year for This Design Event

Designers and creators actively engaged in interiors, products, architecture, and fashion present their new works and ideas. We, who see and touch them, ask questions. From this exchange, new thoughts and forms emerge, moving to the next phase.──Design Tide is a place that vividly embodies experiences and sensations beyond mere objects.

The main venue's spatial design this year was handled by interdisciplinary artist Makoto Orizaki. The concept, 'Loose Framework' (Yurui Waku),──outlining, gradually becomes apparent as you enter the main venue.

Orizaki explained, "Please experience the feeling of gathering under a tree, as air cushioning wrapped around a wooden frame gently embraces you. When the venue was completed, I was glad it became a 'tree' because trees are often unnoticed even when present. This allowed us to create a 'loose framework' without emphasizing divisions, conveying the entire space as a single package."

He also mentioned that because "the venue's structure and exhibitors hadn't been well-linked before," he has placed 'hidden items' like mushrooms and beehives within the venue. He hopes visitors will seek them out.

Upon entering the venue, you'll find the 'Tide Focus,' a space for new works by invited artists unique to the year. This year, it features a collection of projects fromDRILL DESIGN, who handle a wide range of work based on product design. We encourage you to explore their challenges and proposals, paying attention to the materials used.

This time, creator HIROKO TAKAHASHI presents her project 'TEXTILE' alongside theproject 'monmaya+', which aims to preserve the craftsmanship of Sendai Tansu chests. Notably, 'TEXTILE' marks her first endeavor in this area. Takahashi commented, "This textile is not limited to a specific use. By entrusting the application to the user, I believe new possibilities will emerge." Also, look out for the display furniture designed by popular architect Makoto Tanijiri, his first such work.

The main 'Tide Exhibition' features the second collection from 'see-saw,' a furniture label launched in 2011 by woodworking studio 'LAUGH,' as well as 'Design Soil,' a project from Kobe University of Design and Information Sciences; 'Food Work,' a project by eight Norwegian designers creating products related to food experiences; 'toki,' an exhibition by French architect and designer Emmanuel Mounier based in Kanda, Tokyo; and designer Atsushi Onuma's proposal for new communication tools merging furniture and mobility. These international and domestic exhibits foster connections among people.

The 'Tide Market,' popular for allowing direct purchases from designers, will feature the 'World Heritage Sites made with LEGO® Blocks PART-3' exhibition, 'POS+' (Post), a concept for "communication accessories",POS+,"Sabae Mimikaki" produced by Cement Produce Design, and Mick Itaya's "Suzumo Chochin," which was well-received last year. These will be available for purchase again this year.
