Wood and Metal: A Combination Mastered by Design Icons

Crafted with the same materials as luxury furniture, this limited edition Lamdash is a statement of refined taste. For this feature, OPENERS commissioned Katsuya Kubokawa, an interior stylist renowned for his work in advertising and magazines, to create a "Luxury in Everyday Life" themed space. He presented the Eames 'Wood Shell Chair,' a timeless classic.

"Beyond being iconic pieces, I felt the three-dimensional curves of the wood complemented the shaver's form. The combination of wood and metal also felt harmonious. Both the chair and the shaver are items that come into contact with the skin. I chose walnut for both to maintain a consistent material aesthetic."

The accompanying comb, a prop, was chosen in a trendy brass finish. Kubokawa noted that the blend of wood and other materials is captivating for its versatility across various settings.

"When it comes to furniture and interior elements, using only wood can create a soft, warm impression. However, pieces that combine wood with other materials, like metal legs, can adapt to both modern and retro spaces. Naturally, they also complement wood-centric interiors. Iconic wood and metal designs are found worldwide, such as George Nelson's benches, Finn Juhl's wall clocks, and Arne Jacobsen's 'Series 7' chairs."

What are his thoughts on holding the "5-Blade Lamdash Limited Edition"?

"It's wonderful how the wood's texture comes through, despite it being a high-performance mechanical device. It truly feels like owning a sophisticated wood objet d'art. It even evokes a similar ambiance to the wood paneling in a car. Ultimately, I believe in investing in the things we use daily. For an item like an electric shaver, used every morning, it feels like it could provide a mood boost before heading out."

For a Modern Touch: Teak, Mahogany, Walnut

The waterproofed natural woods come in five varieties: walnut, teak, mahogany, rosewood, and burlwood. Each possesses a distinct charm, making the selection process a delightful dilemma.

"Rosewood and burlwood have a classic, luxurious feel with their piano finish. For a more modern or contemporary casual look, teak, mahogany, and walnut would be excellent choices. Recently, grayish tones have become trendy for flooring, creating a less saturated aesthetic. However, that applies to large surfaces like flooring; for smaller items like shavers, choosing what you love is key. Since wood is incorporated into most interiors, any choice will harmonize well with your existing decor."

Let's revisit the features of the "5-Blade Lamdash Limited Edition." There are three main enhancements compared to previous models. These features are also present in the top-tier regular model (ES-LV9CX).

First is the "5D Active Suspension." In addition to the conventional forward, backward, left, right, and up-down movements, it now includes new forward-backward sliding and diagonal motions when in contact with the skin. This allows it to follow the complex contours of the face more closely, resulting in enhanced closeness and reduced missed stubble under the jawline.

Second is the "Power Quick Slit Blade." Panasonic develops its blades in-house, and this new slit blade features a trapezoidal shape with recessed sides. This significantly improves its ability to lift flat-lying hairs, achieving a 200% increase in hair intake compared to previous models.

Finally, there's the "Smart Lock." This feature uses a sensor to detect the skin's subtle electrical signals, ensuring the switch only activates when the shaver is held by hand. This prevents accidental activation, such as when packed in a bag during a business trip.

Burlwood

Building on the expertise in vibrators and small motors that National (now Panasonic) cultivated before the war, the company introduced Japan's first electric razor, the "MS10," in 1955. Since then, Panasonic's men's shavers have evolved as flagship products, carrying on a long tradition. The "Lamdash," its flagship model, enjoys significant popularity in Japan. The 5-blade series, in particular, has garnered a devoted following with its next-level sharpness and smoothness.

This is a limited edition model, featuring the pinnacle of men's shaver technology and adorned with beautiful natural wood on its curved body, complete with a serial number. For those who have honed their discerning eye, its value will undoubtedly be clear. If you wish to see or experience it firsthand, we invite you to visit the "Panasonic LAMDASH LOUNGE" held at Zero Base Omotesando.
