What the apartment name "LIFE" signifies
In 2010, Daiwa House Industry's Yokohama Branch established an in-house development team called "ATOM." Since then, focusing on the theme of "architecture and art," they have created permanent art installations with various talented artists, each with a unique concept for every property, constructing highly original apartment buildings.
The building in Takatsu Ward, Kawasaki City, a six-story structure with 19 units, may not appear distinctive at first glance, but it houses spaces aligned with its theme. Regarding this apartment building, Takashi Shijo of ATOM explains, "This is the eighth property we've developed in five years with the theme of architecture and art, named 'LIFE.' True to its name, it's a condominium centered around 'living.' It includes a licensed daycare on the first floor, rental apartments from the second to sixth floors, and a dedicated resident meditation space on the left side of the building. Residents can use this space for meditation or as a multi-purpose area for relaxation."
A space for meditation, evoking a sense of diverse light
The meditation space features the original work "expose," a collaboration between Takuya Matsumoto, known for his live performance lighting and 3D projection mapping for major rock bands, and Takuya Takahashi of Oyster Inc., acclaimed for sound direction in exhibition spaces, along with technology artist Shinya Matsuyama. Visitors can experience this installation.
"expose" is an installation designed for meditation, utilizing a 12-meter high space. Through sophisticated LED lighting control technology, it offers an approximately 15-minute experience that allows participants to explore the changes in sensation and emotion evoked by bathing in light of various qualities within a darkened environment.
Matsumoto, who led the installation, commented, "Japanese people often find it difficult to incorporate art into their homes. For this project, we aimed to create art that integrates with daily life, fitting the theme of 'living.' To express 'dark light' in this piece, we custom-designed a new LED dimmer capable of 4096 levels of dimming. Approximately 17,000 LEDs are installed, stretching 272 meters if laid end to end."
Daiwa House Industry has a history of creating unique properties, having previously collaborated with artists such as Tomoyuki Tanaka of "FPM," Lisa Ono, and Towa Tei, as well as Tetsuya from "L'Arc-en-Ciel." Shijo of ATOM states, "Real estate is unique to its location; we build each property while respecting its inherent characteristics and originality. The owner of the apartment building 'LIFE' is a flower instructor, and the location is lush with greenery. We incorporated the theme of 'living' into the exterior art and created a space suitable for meditation that allows one to experience the diversity of light, thereby adding new value to a rental property."
