Revitalizing a Housing Complex Steeped in Showa-Era Ambiance
How can one arrange a 35-year-old apartment with Japanese-style rooms and a three-room-plus-kitchen layout—often avoided by younger generations—to suit their personal style and highlight its charm? To answer this challenge, a foreign flower artist and his Japanese illustrator wife took on the task.
With the theme "A Little Atelier of Semi-Western Style," the room was coordinated to evoke the couple's daily life, centered around "living with flowers and calligraphy." The result is a "semi-Western style" home, a blend of Japanese and Western elements, featuring an atelier for Western-style art creation and vintage-inspired furniture and spaces within a compact, Japanese-style dwelling.
Living + Atelier Floor Plan
The 6.5-tatami mat dining & living room and the 4.5-tatami mat room were combined into a single space by removing the partition. The dining area features a cafe set, while the living area, with a sofa placed on the tatami, maintains a low-profile style that respects the Japanese aesthetic. The space exudes a sense of craftsmanship and a subtle industrial feel.
The 4.5-tatami mat "bedroom" is simply furnished, with a focus on a favorite bed, free of unnecessary items. The 6-tatami mat "atelier" was created as a compact yet functional workspace, adorned with a small work table and tools for art production.
