Antonin & Noemi Raymond Exhibition
Handcrafted Modernism in Architecture and Life
"INTERIOR & DESIGN NEWS" presents carefully selected information on the latest interior and design trends in Tokyo, along with event reports.
For our sixth installment, we introduce a retrospective exhibition of Antonin and Noemi Raymond, pioneers of modernist architecture and bridges between Japanese and global cultures.
Text by Baumas Finkelstein
Antonin Raymond, known as a pioneer of modernist architecture who designed over 500 buildings in Japan and the United States, and his wife, the designer Noemi Raymond.
A retrospective exhibition, a culmination of their partnership spanning over 60 years, has toured Pennsylvania and California in the United States and is now being held in Japan.
This is the first major exhibition of the Raymonds' work.
The Raymonds, who spent 40 years of their careers in Japan, were not only pioneers of modernism but also keen appreciators of Japanese culture through their close relationships with artists and thinkers of the time. Their unique approach, valuing simple materials and craftsmanship while embracing contemporary design, likely owes much to their life in Japan.

A highlight of this exhibition is the inclusion of works by Kunio Maekawa, Junzo Yoshimura, Makoto Masuzawa, and George Nakashima, who began their architectural careers under Antonin Raymond. Visitors can gain insight into the significant contributions of the Raymonds to the development of modern architecture and design in Japan.
