Mercedes' Top-Tier SUV, the "GLS," Undergoes Full Model Change
Mercedes-Benz Japan has announced the "GLS," which has evolved into its third generation with a full model change. Sales have commenced.
Spacious Interior Accommodates Seven Adults in Comfort
This is the third generation GLS, including its "GL" lineage. As its name suggests, with "GL" denoting Mercedes' SUV line and "S" indicating its top-tier status, the GLS boasts a body size that comfortably seats seven adults, positioning it as Mercedes-Benz's flagship SUV. This full model change sees it equipped with numerous cutting-edge features befitting a flagship SUV.
The new lineup features two models: the "GLS 400d 4MATIC," powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six diesel turbo engine producing a maximum output of 243 kW (330 ps) and peak torque of 700 Nm, and the "GLS 580 4MATIC," equipped with a 4.0-liter V8 gasoline twin-turbo engine delivering 360 kW (489 ps) and 700 Nm of torque.

Both models feature the "9G-TRONIC" 9-speed automatic transmission and are paired with the "4MATIC" all-wheel-drive system.
The gasoline engine model also incorporates new technology. An electric motor, positioned between the engine and transmission, generates up to 16 kW (22 ps) and 250 Nm of torque. This motor, along with a 48V electrical system, utilizes regenerative braking, similar to a hybrid, to charge a lithium-ion battery with approximately 1 kWh capacity. When the engine is at low RPMs, this stored energy is used to supplement power, enhancing efficiency and contributing to strong acceleration.

The suspension is equipped as standard with the high-performance AIRMATIC system, which uses sensors and algorithms to adapt damping characteristics to road conditions and driving situations. All components have been improved from the previous generation, with optimized suspension mounts to enhance ride comfort. Furthermore, it maintains a constant vehicle ride height regardless of the weight of occupants or cargo.
The "E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL" system, making its debut in Japan on the gasoline "GLS 580 4MATIC" model, can also recover energy when driving over uneven surfaces.
Turning to the exterior, the front section features a large, octagonal radiator grille that is perpendicular to the ground, flanked by two louvers and a chrome-finished underguard, all exuding SUV presence and power. These elements also contribute to improved aerodynamics, achieving a drag coefficient of 0.32.
Inside, the dashboard is equipped with a "12.3-inch Widescreen Display" and a "12.3-inch Cockpit Display." Merged under a single glass cover, they create a flowing, futuristic design that extends to the door panels. The interior trim also features horizontal lines as an accent.
The full model change has improved both spaciousness and cargo capacity. The interior cabin is larger, and the second-row seats feature an electric slide function for fore-and-aft adjustment. Sliding them to the rearmost position increases legroom by 87 mm and also enhances ease of entry and exit.
Safety systems are also standard, including the "Radar Safety Package," which incorporates features such as Active Brake Assist and Evasive Steering Assist.
Pricing starts at 12.63 million yen for the 3.0-liter inline-six diesel turbo "GLS 400 d 4MATIC," and 16.69 million yen for the 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo "GLS 580 4MATIC." Deliveries for the "GLS 580 4MATIC" are scheduled to begin in June or later.
