Lexus Launches All-New Flagship SUV, the LX

On January 12, Lexus launched the all-new LX, its flagship SUV and the second model in the next-generation Lexus lineup, following the new NX. First released in North America in 1996 and introduced to Japan in 2015, the Lexus LX has been a popular flagship SUV, balancing driving performance capable of withstanding any road condition worldwide with a refined ride. As of the end of December 2021, approximately 510,000 units have been sold cumulatively in about 50 countries and regions.

Two New Grades Introduced

The new LX aims to provide an effortless and refined travel experience on any road surface by pursuing both off-road and on-road performance. The body measures 5,100mm in length, 1,990mm in width, and 1,885mm in height, making it 20mm longer, 10mm wider, and 25mm lower than its predecessor. The wheelbase remains unchanged at 2,850mm.
To ensure reliability, durability, and off-road capability, the new LX retains the body-on-frame structure while adopting the new GA-F platform. By using aluminum for the roof and all door panels, as well as the hood, the vehicle's weight has been reduced to between 2,540kg and 2,600kg, a decrease of approximately 200kg. Furthermore, the fundamental character of the vehicle has been renewed through measures such as achieving a highly rigid body via digital development.
The powertrain features a high-output, high-torque 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbo gasoline engine, a downsizing from the previous naturally aspirated V8. It produces a maximum output of 305kW (415ps) and a maximum torque of 650Nm, surpassing the previous generation. Power is delivered to all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission.
In terms of driving dynamics, the integration of an Electronic-controlled Brake system (ECB) and Electric Power Steering system (EPS) allows users to fully enjoy the Lexus driving experience on both on-road and off-road conditions. Concurrently, these fundamental improvements and the adoption of a new powertrain contribute to enhanced environmental performance. The annual CO2 emissions during vehicle use are estimated to be reduced by approximately 20% globally across all units compared to the previous model, contributing to the realization of a carbon-neutral society.
For off-road performance, key figures such as ground clearance (approach, departure, and ramp breakover angles), maximum stable inclination angle of 44 degrees, climbing ability of 45 degrees, and maximum wading depth of 700mm are maintained at levels comparable to the previous model. The Multi-Terrain Select system, allowing selection from six modes (AUTO/DIRT/SAND/MUD/DEEP SNOW/ROCK) for off-road driving support based on road conditions, has been carried over to the new model. By integrating control of brake hydraulic pressure, driving force, and suspension, optimized for the selected mode, it enhances off-road capability according to the terrain.
Furthermore, the operational range has been expanded from the previous low-range (L4) only to include high-range (H4). This evolution enables effortless and refined driving on any road worldwide, from ultra-low-speed crawling on rocky terrain to high-speed driving on unpaved surfaces. Additionally, the new AUTO mode, which debuted in this model, estimates the road surface conditions based on various sensor data and optimizes brake hydraulic pressure, driving force, and suspension control. This allows the vehicle to achieve optimal off-road performance for the driving scene without requiring the driver to manually switch modes.
The exterior features a new expression of the spindle grille, befitting the LX. Seven floating bars create a three-dimensional shape with a seamless structure, free of a frame. The thickness of each bar has been meticulously adjusted in millimeter increments to balance design aesthetics with the high cooling performance required by the twin-turbo engine. The large openings of the side radiator grilles also ensure adequate cooling, with their aerodynamic shapes contributing to a design rooted in functionality, characteristic of the LX.
The L-shaped clearance lamps (with daytime running light function) have evolved into a three-dimensional form. Furthermore, the inner lenses are dualized, with each having a different stepped level.
The side profile is highlighted by 22-inch forged aluminum wheels, emphasizing the largest diameter in the Lexus lineup with a high-contrast finish of black and machined bright. The brand mark positioned in the center of the rear has been updated from the traditional L-shaped logo to the new LEXUS logo, symbolizing the next generation of Lexus.
In the interior, to ensure safer and more comfortable driving in harsh off-road conditions, the instrument panel features Lexus' first dual display with a 12.3-inch upper screen and a 7-inch lower screen, along with the world's first Back Underfloor View function. In addition to the base LX600 grade, two new grades have been introduced: the "LX600 EXECUTIVE," featuring a dedicated design with four independent rear seats for elegant and secure travel on any road, and the "LX600 OFFROAD," which enhances off-road performance with front and rear differential locks and a dedicated exterior design. These additions aim to cater to the diverse needs and lifestyles of users.
Additionally, the fingerprint authentication start switch, a first for Lexus, contributes to reducing the risk of theft.
Pricing is set at 12.5 million yen for the LX600, 12.9 million yen for the LX600 "OFFROAD," and 18 million yen for the LX600 "EXECUTIVE."
