BMW Announces New M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe
BMW has announced the new M3 Sedan, M4 Coupe, and their high-performance "Competition" variants.
A distinctive grille indicates the engine's need for ample cooling air
The M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe are high-performance models equipped with a high-revving inline-six engine that delivers the exceptional performance characteristic of M models. As with the previous generation, a "Competition" variant offering further enhanced performance is available for both models.
The M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe are powered by a 3-liter inline-six twin-turbo engine, producing a maximum output of 353 kW (480 ps) at 6,250 rpm and peak torque of 550 Nm between 2,650 and 6,130 rpm, driving the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission.
The Competition model's enhanced 3-liter inline-six twin-turbo engine delivers 375 kW (510 ps) at 6,250 rpm and 650 Nm of torque between 2,750 and 5,500 rpm, with a maximum engine speed of 7,200 rpm. Power is sent to the rear via an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission, and an optional all-wheel-drive M xDrive system will be available in 2021.
These power characteristics enable exceptionally strong acceleration. This is evident in the measured figures: the M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds. The 0-200 km/h sprint takes 13.7 seconds, while intermediate acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h is achieved in 4.1 seconds (4th gear) or 5.6 seconds (5th gear).
For the Competition models, 0-100 km/h acceleration is 3.9 seconds, 0-200 km/h takes 12.5 seconds, and intermediate acceleration from 80-120 km/h is 2.6 seconds (4th gear) or 3.4 seconds (5th gear). The top speed for all model variations is electronically limited to 250 km/h, which can be increased to 290 km/h with the optional M Driver's Package.
The bodywork, with its model-specific exterior dimensions, achieves the ideal proportions for a high-performance sports car. Compared to the previous generation, the length has increased by 122 mm to 4,794 mm, and the wheelbase has grown by 45 mm to 2,857 mm. Furthermore, the M3 Sedan's width has increased by 26 mm to 1,903 mm, with a height of 1,433 mm. In comparison to the new 3 Series Sedan, it is 85 mm longer, 75 mm wider, and 2 mm lower.
The M4 Coupe's width has increased by 17 mm to 1,887 mm compared to the previous model, and its height has grown by 5 mm to 1,393 mm. Additionally, compared to the new 4 Series Coupe, it is 24 mm longer, 40 mm wider, and 10 mm taller.
The exterior of the M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe is distinctively individual, recognizable from any angle. The kidney grille design at the front end is sharply differentiated, featuring a frameless, all-black specification that extends vertically quite low. This impressively signifies the substantial cooling air required by the engine housed behind it.
Both models feature M-specific horizontal double bars with model badges. Large intakes have been added to the sides of the kidney grille to optimize cooling for the drivetrain and brake systems. The roof on both models is standard carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP).
The interior is striking, with the red M button on the M leather steering wheel, the red start/stop button on the center console, the embossed M logo on the leather surface of the selector lever with its new drive logic switch, and the M GmbH colored stitching.
The selector lever incorporates a waterfall light within its cut-out sections. New M Sport seats and extended fine-grain Merino leather are standard, with optional M Carbon bucket seats available.
The global market launch is scheduled to begin in March 2021.
