Introducing the "Tiguan R," Volkswagen's First SUV Sport Grade

The Tiguan has undergone a major minor change. In addition to a refreshed exterior design, the powertrain has also been renewed, resulting in all-around advancements in safety, comfort, and convenience.
This minor change also introduces the "Tiguan R," Volkswagen's first-ever sport grade for an SUV. It features exclusive exterior elements, large-diameter alloy wheels, and for the first time in a Volkswagen model, "R Performance Torque Vectoring," which distributes driving force not only between the front and rear wheels but also between the left and right rear wheels.
The most distinctive feature of the Tiguan's exterior design is its newly designed front end, now equipped with LED headlights. The bonnet extends further up to the distinctive radiator grille, maintaining the powerful design from the previous generation.
The powertrain has been updated from the previous 1.4-liter TSI engine to a new 1.5-liter TSI engine. It features Active Cylinder Management (cylinder deactivation), which switches between four and two cylinders depending on driving conditions to reduce fuel consumption.
Meanwhile, the high-performance "Tiguan R" model is equipped with a 2.0 TSI engine, producing a maximum output of 235 kW (320 PS) and a maximum torque of 420 Nm, achieving 0-100 km/h acceleration in 4.9 seconds.
All models use a 7-speed DSG transmission. However, the "Tiguan R" features a transmission designed to handle higher torque.
In terms of safety equipment, all models now come standard with "Travel Assist," an all-speed lane-keeping assistance system that evolves from the previous "Traffic Assist" (traffic jam assist). This contributes to improved safety and reduced fatigue during long-distance driving on highways and other roads.
The infotainment system features a new generation of constantly connected infotainment. Combined with the online service "We Connect," it allows access to the latest traffic information. Furthermore, through a dedicated smartphone app, users can now lock and unlock the doors, check for forgotten open windows, and confirm vehicle information such as parking location.
To commemorate the Tiguan's launch in Japan, a special edition "TSI First Edition" has also been introduced. Based on the TSI Elegance, it features a chic interior with two-tone exclusive leather seats and wood paneling, along with a black roof lining similar to the TSI R-Line. It also comes standard with 19-inch wheels and Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC). In addition to the five body colors shared with the TSI Elegance, a dedicated color, Ginger Black Metallic, is also available.
Pricing starts at ¥4,079,000 for the entry-grade TSI Active, ¥4,839,000 for the TSI Elegance, ¥5,249,000 for the special edition TSI First Edition, ¥5,039,000 for the TSI R-Line, and ¥6,849,000 for the R.
