The Most Powerful M5 Competition Model, the M5 CS, Debuts as a Limited Edition of 1100 Units Worldwide
BMW has announced the M5 CS, a limited edition of 1100 units worldwide, based on the M5 high-performance model. It features the most powerful engine in the current lineup and has undergone weight reduction. In Japan, it was released in a limited run of five units through the BMW online store.
Powered by a 4.4-liter V8 Engine Producing 635ps
The M5 CS belongs to the M high-performance models within the BMW M lineup, designed for circuit driving. It boasts CS-exclusive tuning and styling, intended to bring the excitement of the racing field from BMW M GmbH into everyday life, making it a special model limited to 1100 units worldwide.
The M5 CS, the most powerful competition model in the M5 lineup and a road-legal, four-seater, is powered by BMW M's most potent 4.4-liter V8 turbo engine to date. It produces 467kW (635ps), an increase of 7kW (10ps) over the M5 Competition.
Paired with an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drive Logic, it achieves 0-100km/h acceleration in 3.0 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than the M5 Competition.
Weight reduction was also a key focus. The M5 CS achieves a diet of approximately 70kg compared to the M5 Competition. With dedicated chassis tuning and the M xDrive system, which intelligently controls the active M differential, its performance is fully unleashed on the circuit.
This M xDrive system allows for progressive changes to the car's handling characteristics, from a variable all-wheel-drive mode with a rear-bias to a purely rear-wheel-drive setup, without DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) intervention. This ensures that the dynamic performance, handling, and driving pleasure can be enjoyed on the track without compromising the everyday practicality of this high-performance sedan.
The chassis is based on the M5 Competition but features a 7mm lower ride height and shock absorbers developed for the M8 Gran Coupé. These dampers not only enhance ride comfort during high-speed driving but also contribute to improved handling at the limit by reducing fluctuations in wheel load. As a result, BMW claims that while intuitive ease of driving in everyday use is maintained, more precise responsiveness is achieved even under demanding circuit conditions.
M carbon-ceramic brakes, known for their high braking power, fade resistance, thermal stability, and wear resistance, are standard.
The exterior design makes a statement with gold bronze accents and CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) body elements, adopting a more aggressive aesthetic.
The interior also contributes to weight reduction by featuring CS-exclusive carbon bucket seats and CS-exclusive lightweight individual rear seats. The M Alcantara steering wheel, also specific to the CS, is equipped with carbon shift paddles, creating a sporty ambiance reminiscent of the racing field.
With a global production of 1,100 units and a limited release of five units in Japan, the price is 25.1 million yen. Deliveries are scheduled for autumn 2021.
