BMW Announces Minor Change to New 5 Series

On May 27, BMW unveiled its updated mid-size 5 Series. The lineup includes sedan and touring variants. Powertrains offer a diverse range, featuring plug-in hybrids, four- and six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines with a 48V mild-hybrid system, and a V8 gasoline engine. Market introduction is slated for July this year.

Exterior and Interior Refined for Sportiness and Presence

The exterior is particularly striking, with a wider and taller kidney grille that slopes further down towards the front apron. The slim-profile headlights now feature a more contemporary graphic, with two U-shaped or, when optional equipment is selected, L-shaped daytime running lights.
At the rear, new three-dimensional L-shaped taillights integrated with the brake lights and trapezoidal tailpipe finishers, standard across all models, complete the design.
Inside, the center console has been redesigned. New features include a 10.25-inch (standard) or 12.3-inch (optional) control display, a sport leather steering wheel with repositioned multifunction buttons, and an enhanced automatic climate control system added to the Touring model.

Diverse Powertrain Options

The powertrain lineup includes a 4.4-liter V8 gasoline engine in the top-tier M550i xDrive Sedan, producing 390 kW (590 ps) (combined fuel consumption: 10.0–9.7 L/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 229–221 g/km). Additionally, three types each of 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder and 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines are available, all equipped with a 48V mild-hybrid system. Their power output ranges broadly from 135 kW (184 ps) to 250 kW (340 ps).
The gasoline engines feature direct injection systems with increased fuel pressure for significantly improved efficiency. Diesel engines utilize two-stage turbocharging for sharper throttle response. Furthermore, the mild-hybrid system, incorporating a powerful 48V starter generator and a second battery, provides an instantaneous 8 kW (11 ps) electric boost, enabling more dynamic overtaking (without lane change) and passing (with lane change).

Driver Assistance Systems with Enhanced Functionality

The optional Lane Departure Warning system now includes a function that returns the vehicle to its original lane via steering assistance. The Steering & Lane Control Assistant has also been updated; when combined with Active Navigation, it uses navigation data to anticipate lane changes and facilitates them using the Lane Change Assistant.
Additionally, a new "Emergency Lane Formation" function (emergency lane change assist) has been introduced, which guides the vehicle into the optimal lane when it is positioned at the end of a convoy on highways. The Parking Assistant's capabilities have also been expanded with the addition of "Reversing Assistant," which automatically steers the vehicle backward over distances of up to 50 meters.
*All specifications are based on the German domestic market.
