Volkswagen's New Crossover SUV, the T-Roc, Makes Its Japan Debut

Volkswagen Group Japan (VGJ) announced its new crossover SUV, the T-Roc, on July 15th, and began sales the same day. In Japan's popular SUV market, this model is positioned between VGJ's larger Tiguan and smaller T-Cross. It features a design that balances a sleek, coupe-like style with a spacious interior. The "MQB" platform is adopted as the chassis production module.

Body Dimensions Nearly Match the Golf, Except for Height

The T-Roc's body measures 4,240mm (4,250mm for the higher-spec R-Line model) in length, 1,825mm in width, and 1,590mm in height. Except for its height, it is nearly the same size as the company's Golf. With a minimum turning radius of 5.0m, it offers excellent maneuverability, ideal for Japanese road conditions.
The exterior features a front end that emphasizes width with a radiator grille integrated with headlights and a front bumper incorporating LED daytime running lights. The rear appeals with its SUV character, featuring a large air intake, underbody guard, and rear diffuser. The long roofline, accented with chrome trim, creates a sleek silhouette.
The rear end is designed in three levels: the roof section at the top, the middle section with 3D LED taillights, and the bumper area at the bottom. This design emphasizes its low, wide, and sporty SUV stance.

In addition to a choice of nine body colors, a two-tone color option, a first for Volkswagen SUVs, is available, with either a black or white roof color depending on the grade.
Inside, the T-Roc features five seats with high seating positions – 512mm in the front and 618mm in the rear. It boasts a class-leading luggage space of 445 liters for its segment, which can be expanded to 1,290 liters by folding down the rear seats.
The instrument panel has a horizontal layout, featuring the "Active Info Display," a digital instrument cluster capable of showing navigation maps, and the "Discover Pro" infotainment system. These are integrated by decorative trim that spans horizontally across the dashboard.
The powertrain consists of a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder diesel 2.0 TDI engine producing 150ps (110kW) and 340Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed DSG transmission. With a fuel economy of 18.6 km/L under WLTC mode, it is also highly economical.

Safety features include adaptive cruise control (ACC) with full speed range and the "Front Assist" pre-collision braking system, standard on all models, inherited from higher-class vehicles. Prices range from 3,849,000 to 4,539,000 yen.
