BMW has added the "118d," a diesel engine model, to its 1 Series lineup and commenced sales.

The 1 Series underwent a full model change in 2019, evolving into its third generation. The shift from the previous FR (front-engine, rear-wheel drive) to FF (front-engine, front-wheel drive) layout expanded the interior space, while the design was also refreshed with the latest concepts, such as in the kidney grille and headlights.

It also features the Tire Slip Control system (ARB), making its debut in Japan, and comes standard with driver assistance functions like Reversing Assist.

The 118d, introduced this time, is equipped with a newly developed 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder diesel engine that reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 5% compared to the previous model. It produces a maximum output of 150 ps (110 kW) and a maximum torque of 350 Nm.

Adopting a two-stage turbocharger for the first time in the 1 Series, it efficiently utilizes the turbo even at low engine speeds immediately after startup. Furthermore, by altering the shape of the piston and cylinder, friction within the cylinder has been significantly reduced.

Additionally, the maximum fuel injection pressure has been increased by approximately 200 bar compared to the previous model, reaching 2,200 bar. This allows for finer atomization of fuel, enhancing combustion efficiency and enabling cleaner combustion by reducing exhaust gas residue.

In terms of design, it features 90mm diameter exhaust tailpipes on both the left and right rear. Moreover, with the optional Navigation Package, vehicle operations and access to information can be controlled simply by conversing with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

Prices start at 3.85 million yen, with the sporty top-grade M Sport model priced at 4.51 million yen.
