Bentley Announces Bentayga PHEV Model
Bentley Bentayga Hybrid
The Third Bentayga Model, a Hybrid, is Born
As the next step towards a sustainable future, Bentley has announced a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of its SUV, the Bentayga.
A PHEV Model Capable of Traveling Up to Approximately 50km on Electric Power Alone
The PHEV model, the Bentayga Hybrid, joins the regular V8 model and the high-performance "Speed" with its W12 engine as the third model in the lineup.
The PHEV model can travel up to 50km on electric power alone according to NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) standards, with a combined range of approximately 858km when the electric motor and engine are used together.
The Bentayga Hybrid is equipped with a 17.3kWh lithium-ion battery. The energy stored in the high-voltage battery is converted by power electronics technology and supplied to the E-motor, as well as used to supplement the conventional 12V battery system.
The E-motor, housed within the transmission between the gearbox and the internal combustion engine, produces an output of 128 ps and a maximum torque of 350 Nm. When combined with the 3.0-liter V6 turbo engine, it achieves a maximum output of 449 ps and a maximum torque of 700 Nm. Furthermore, the engine assists the E-motor when torque is required or when speeds exceed approximately 135 km/h.
There are three drive modes: EV Drive, Hybrid, and Hold. Additionally, the "Bentley Hybrid Efficiency Navigation" system provides feedback through the accelerator pedal to the driver, indicating when to switch from EV to hybrid driving based on the route, assisting in the most efficient operation.
Upon powering up the vehicle, the EV Drive mode is immediately engaged, prioritizing electric-only driving whenever possible. In Hybrid mode, when a destination is entered, the system intelligently calculates the optimal drive mode for different driving scenarios, such as conserving battery power for urban areas, ensuring the most efficient use of battery energy.
In Hold mode, the engine and electric power are balanced to maintain the high-voltage battery charge for electric driving when needed. Selecting the Sport mode within the drive dynamics offers the default Hold mode, engaging boost and regeneration.
The exterior and interior styling follow the refreshed design introduced in the July 2020 facelift.
Bentley Motors CEO Adrian Hallmark stated, "Our aim is to lead the world as a sustainable luxury car manufacturer, and the Bentayga Hybrid is the next step in that journey." Pricing and availability for the Japanese market have not yet been announced, and we await further details.
