High Expectations in America
While it may not have garnered widespread attention, the New York Auto Show in early April saw the unveiling of two models poised to lead the premium SUV market: the Mercedes-Benz GLE and the Lexus RX.RXBoth were production-ready vehicles, meaning they will be gracing our roads this year.
History suggests these two vehicles offer a preview of the premium SUV market's near future. Both were first introduced in 1997, with sales commencing in North America. The Mercedes arrived as the 'M-Class,' and it was sensational at the time, marking the serious entry of a European premium brand into the SUV segment. However, the ML of that era differed significantly from today's models. It employed a ladder frame, aligning with the American usage of SUVs for activities like towing.
Lexus took a completely opposite approach with the RX. It featured a monocoque body structure, creating the first passenger car-based SUV in its category. Its groundbreaking nature is self-evident; it was the birth of the car-like SUV.
Incidentally, BMW released the X5 shortly after, in 1999. While a step behind Mercedes, their monocoque-bodied, driving-focused concept resonated widely, leading to great success. The current generation underwent a full model change in2013and carries on that original ethos.
Now, having witnessed the unveiling of the new RX firsthand, I'd like to report on it here.
Lexus's press conference was scheduled for the morning of the first press day, and the venue was not the exhibition booth itself, but a separate location.
Pastfull model change of the GSLexus has often adopted this approach in New York, as they did during the "GS" full model change. This is indicative of the high level of attention Lexus commands in the city and the anticipation of a large influx of media from America and beyond.
Consequently, the venue was exceptionally crowded. Numerous television cameras were present, intently capturing every moment. It was a tangible reminder that Lexus is a brand that achieves over 300,000 annual sales in America.

Enhanced Rear Seat Comfort
The unveiled RX was quintessentially Lexus. While retaining its RX identity, the spindle grille was emphasized, giving it the 'NX face.' However, the overall silhouette felt more elongated and elegant. The rear quarter pillar was blacked out, creating an illusion of a floating roof, and the L-shaped triple LED headlights added a sharp, futuristic touch, signifying Lexus's advanced design.
The dimensions have been updated, with a 50mm increase in wheelbase and the availability of 20-inch wheels as standard. This translates to a more elegant yet powerful presence. The differentiation from the NX appears well-executed. The overall dimensions are 4,890 x 1,895 x 1,690mm.
The interior has also evolved. The large monitor suggests improved operability, while the cabin exudes a chic, premium feel. It avoids any childishness, which is a welcome change. Furthermore, rear seat comfort has been a key focus this time. With increased legroom and features like power reclining and heated seats, it now offers a more chauffeur-driven experience.
There are two grades: the 'RX350' and the 'RX450h.' The difference lies in the powertrain; the former is equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 unit, while the latter combines a 3.5-liter V6 with an electric motor. Both are available with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The F SPORT model features newly tuned electric active stabilizers for enhanced cornering stability.
Additionally, numerous electronic safety devices are notable, including Pre-Collision Safety, Lane Keeping Assist, and Automatic High Beams. The abundance of advanced safety features is crucial for sales in the American market.
While I haven't had the chance to drive it yet, considering the performance of the NX, expectations for the new RX are high. The international press drive is scheduled for this summer, and a report should be available in early September. For those eagerly awaiting details, please bear with us a little longer.
