Taiwanese Dealership Group Simultaneously Launches Two British Brands

On April 9th, Yung San MOTORS Co., Ltd. announced the opening of official dealerships for McLaren and Aston Martin in Kyushu, Fukuoka.

The operating entity, Yung San Motors, was established in Taiwan in 2008 as an automotive dealer. Currently, in addition to Aston Martin and McLaren, they handle brands like Bentley and Bugatti, and are said to have received high global acclaim for their sales performance and customer satisfaction. Nevertheless, cases of overseas automotive dealers establishing businesses in Japan are extremely rare. Why did Yung San MOTORS decide to sell two of Britain's leading sports car manufacturers in Japan?

Aston Martin Makes Its Kyushu Debut

Firstly, neither Aston Martin nor McLaren had an official dealership in the Fukuoka area until now. According to Yung San MOTORS, the Fukuoka region accounts for approximately 10 percent of Japan's luxury car market. By establishing a suitable dealership in this area and cultivating the local market, it holds significant meaning for the domestic business of both brands.

Aston Martin Asia Pacific, the parent company of the recently established Aston Martin Japan, had been conducting various considerations for dealer establishment for about ten years, but ultimately could not find a suitable candidate. Meanwhile, at Yung San Motors, a dealer in Taiwan, which is also under the jurisdiction of Aston Martin Asia Pacific, had achieved great success. Therefore, Aston Martin first approached Yung San Motors. At this time, as Yung San Motors was also considering overseas expansion, their intentions aligned.

Aiming for Success with Expertise and Track Record from Taiwan

Conversely, Yung San Motors approached McLaren after deciding to open an Aston Martin dealership. It is likely that they determined that handling McLaren as well would entail less business risk than operating an Aston Martin-only dealership.

Furthermore, both Aston Martin and McLaren had proactive reasons for entrusting Yung San MOTORS with dealerships in the Fukuoka region.

Regardless of who made the initial offer, the strong enthusiasm and passion for expanding into Fukuoka from Chairman Timothy Chan and the entire Yung San Motors team were a major driving force. It is said that Chairman Chan's grandfather studied at Keio University in Japan, and his father also developed a fashion-related business in Japan. In other words, Japan was a very familiar country to Chairman Chan.

Another reason is that Yung San MOTORS is expected to function not only as a dealer but also as an importer.

For major imported car manufacturers, the Japanese subsidiary typically imports products from the parent company and then allocates them to official dealerships within Japan. However, at least for McLaren, the dealership must directly liaise with the UK headquarters and handle the import of vehicles and parts. Naturally, communication is conducted in English.

This is a task that ordinary Japanese car dealerships cannot easily undertake. However, Yung San Motors already has experience in performing such operations. In the first place, the majority of Yung San Motors' staff can speak English, so there are no communication barriers with the UK.

The third reason is the track record that Yung San MOTORS has built up in Taiwan.

As mentioned earlier, Yung San MOTORS has received awards such as Best Dealer of the Year from the automotive brands they handle. These accolades were given in recognition of their sales volume and growth rate, which are at a high level globally. Yung San MOTORS explains that as a result, they have achieved success, capturing 60 percent of the luxury car market share in Taiwan.

Showroom Opens in May

When asked about the secret to business success by Chairman Chan, who attended the press conference, he humbly stated, "No, we don't believe we have succeeded yet." He continued, "Our goal is not just to satisfy our customers, but to bring them joy that exceeds their expectations. To that end, we are committed to internal training to provide the best customer service in our showrooms, and we are planning various events such as track events using circuits and touring drives for our customers to participate in."
When finally asked about Yung San MOTORS' target sales volume, he replied, "We do not set sales targets. Our goal is to make our customers happy, and we believe that if we achieve this, sales volume will naturally follow."

In other words, Yung San MOTORS intends to develop its business in Japan with a long-term perspective, rather than pursuing short-term profits. This is also evident in the fact that the showroom, set to open in Harada, Higashi-ku, Fukuoka City this October, including the land, is company-owned.

Yung San MOTORS plans to first open a temporary showroom in the Saigin Building in Shimokawabata-cho, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City in May, and then move to the aforementioned showroom, which will handle everything from display to after-sales service, to commence full-scale operations.
