New 2-Liter Inline-4 Turbo Engine Introduced
The Audi four-door coupe models, the "A7/S7/RS 7 Sportback," which debuted in 2011 and received their first minor change in May 2014, have finally made their long-awaited debut in Japan. While sales had already commenced in their home country of Germany last year, this marks their arrival in Japan.
The new A7 Sportback series features a range of updates befitting an Audi premium model, including a refreshed design, the latest powertrains, and enhancements to safety and infotainment systems. However, the most significant change is likely the refinement of the exterior.
While retaining the distinctive hatchback and wide, low stance characteristic of the series, the front "Singleframe" grille, a hexagonal motif embodying Audi's modern identity, has been updated to a more sculpted design. The bumpers and hood shape have also been revised, creating a sharper and sportier appearance.
The headlights now feature the Matrix LED technology, inherited from the "A8." This system, composed of low-beam LEDs and 19 individual high-beam LEDs, uses a front-mounted camera to sense the surroundings and selectively illuminate or extinguish LEDs. This innovative lighting system illuminates the road precisely without dazzling oncoming or preceding vehicles.
All models in the new A7 Sportback series are equipped with Audi's proprietary quattro all-wheel-drive system. The lineup includes two engine options for the A7 Sportback and one each for the S7 and RS 7 Sportback, totaling four powertrains. The most accessible A7 Sportback model will now feature a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder DOHC intercooled turbo "2.0 TFSI" for the first time (scheduled for release in August). Its higher-tier counterpart is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 DOHC supercharged "3.0 TSFI" engine, delivering 245 kW (333 hp), an increase of 23 hp over the previous generation.
The S7 Sportback is powered by a 4.0-liter V8 DOHC twin-turbo intercooled engine producing 331 kW (450 hp). A 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission is paired with these three models.
Meanwhile, the RS 7 Sportback, while sharing the same 4.0-liter V8 DOHC twin-turbo intercooled engine as the S7, boasts a higher output of 412 kW (560 hp), positioning it as the flagship model of the series. To improve fuel efficiency, it incorporates cylinder deactivation technology (COD - Cylinder On Demand) and is equipped with a multi-stage 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.

Seating Capacity Increased from 4 to 5
The body utilizes aluminum and high-strength steel, achieving both lightweight construction and high rigidity. The suspension system features dynamic suspension for the A7 Sportback, adaptive air suspension sport for the S7 Sportback, and sport suspension plus with DRC for the RS 7 Sportback as standard. Carbon-ceramic brakes are available as an option.
All models are equipped as standard with "Audi drive select," allowing drivers to choose driving characteristics based on their preferences and driving conditions. Four modes – "Comfort," "Auto," "Dynamic," and "Efficiency" – can be selected via a switch.
Inside, all models come standard with the BOSE surround sound system. The rear seat of the A7 Sportback has been redesigned to accommodate three passengers, increasing the seating capacity to five (remaining at four for the S7/RS 7 Sportback). The use of "acoustic glass," which offers excellent sound insulation, further enhances cabin comfort.
The infotainment system, Audi's proprietary "MMI (Multi Media Interface)," has also been updated to the latest generation. By connecting the MMI to a network via a mobile phone, Audi connect enables real-time access to various information, including weather, gas stations, parking, news, and flight details.
The "Audi connect Navigator" operator service is also included, offering a "facility search service" and a "booking service" for hotels and restaurants, allowing users to make reservations through dialogue with a dedicated call center. This simplifies the process of setting navigation destinations.
In terms of safety, all models are equipped as standard with "Audi pre sense plus," an active safety package designed to prevent accidents. This includes the Audi brake guard automatic braking function, Audi side assist which illuminates a light in the door mirror when detecting a hazard during lane changes, and adaptive cruise control with stop & go function.
Additionally, an evolved "night vision system" capable of recognizing animals, and an Audi parking system with park assist, which automatically controls steering during parking, are available as options (standard only on the RS 7).
The prices are as follows: A7 Sportback "2.0 TFSI" at 7.16 million yen, "3.0 TSFI" at 9.24 million yen, S7 Sportback at 13.44 million yen, and RS 7 Sportback at 17.72 million yen.
