Mercedes-Benz, which launched the world's first diesel passenger car in 1936, currently offers clean diesel models with 3-liter, six-cylinder engines in Japan for the "E Class," "M Class," "GL Class," and "G Class."E Class" and the "G Class," and now adds models equipped with a newly developed 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine to the "E Class" and "CLS Class."G ClassAnd now, models equipped with a newly developed 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine have been added to the "E Class" and "CLS Class."
This engine incorporates advanced technology, including a two-stage turbocharger that provides quick response from low RPMs and high power at high RPMs. It delivers a maximum output of 177 ps and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. Furthermore, the "E 220 BlueTEC" achieves fuel efficiency of 18.6 km/ℓ under the JC08 mode.
In terms of environmental performance, like previous clean diesel models, it employs "BlueTEC," which significantly reduces harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) by injecting urea solution into the exhaust gas to create a chemical reaction. This system also meets Japan's stringent diesel emission regulations, considered the strictest in the world.
With the introduction of the 2.2-liter clean diesel models, the E Class lineup has been revised. Four new models are added as entry-level grades: "E 220 BlueTEC," "E 220 BlueTEC Avantgarde," "E 220 BlueTEC Stationwagon," and "E 220 BlueTEC Stationwagon Avantgarde." In contrast, the gasoline engine models "E 250" and "E 250 Stationwagon," which were previously the entry-level grades, will be discontinued.
Pricing starts at 5.99 million yen for the "E 220 BlueTEC" and 6.34 million yen for the "E 220 BlueTEC Stationwagon." For the CLS Class, the "CLS 220 BlueTEC" is priced at 7.65 million yen, making it 2.34 million yen cheaper than the previous entry-level grade, the "CLS 400." The "CLS 220 BlueTEC Shooting Brake" is priced at 7.91 million yen.
