BMW's Smallest Open-Top Model
The new BMW 2 Series Cabriolet, unveiled domestically today, is the successor to the previous generation "1 Series Cabriolet" and debuted at last year's Paris Motor Show. It is the open-top version of the "2 Series Coupe," which is already on sale in Japan.1 Series CabrioletIt is the open-top version of the "2 Series Coupe," which is already on sale in Japan. In Germany, there are four grades available based on power, displacement, and whether it's gasoline or diesel. However, the model introduced in Japan is solely the "220i Cabriolet," equipped with a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine, delivering a maximum output of 135kW (184ps) and a peak torque of 270Nm (27.5kgm). This is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and like other models, it is offered in three design lines: "Sport," "Luxury," and "M Sport."
While the absence of the "M235i Cabriolet" and diesel models might be slightly disappointing, the greatest appeal of the 2 Series Cabriolet undoubtedly lies in the enjoyment of open-air driving.
The highly comfortable and practical fully automatic soft top can be operated with a single button at speeds below 50 km/h, taking just 20 seconds to open or close. Furthermore, the adoption of a soft top with excellent sound insulation has significantly reduced interior noise compared to the previous generation, successfully enhancing cabin comfort.
Another significant topic for this car is the increased trunk capacity, which has been a weakness for convertibles. With the soft top closed, the capacity is expanded by 30 liters to 335 liters, and even with the soft top open, it offers an expanded 280 liters, providing ample space for a weekend getaway for two. The prices are 5.25 million yen for the "220i Cabriolet Sport," 5.44 million yen for the "220i Cabriolet Luxury," and 5.66 million yen for the "220i Cabriolet M Sport."
Regarding the introduction of the 2 Series Cabriolet, Keiko Sato, Product Manager at BMW JAPAN, commented, "The previous generation 1 Series Cabriolet had the highest proportion of female owners among all BMW lineups. We aim to appeal to those seeking a sophisticated car lifestyle with this new model, which possesses an elegant and refined style in a compact body." Indeed, with approximately 30% of previous owners being women, expectations are high.
The vehicle will be on display at the "BMW Group Studio" located at the Yaesu South Exit of Tokyo Station from tomorrow, March 26, 2015 (Thursday) to April 14 (Tuesday). Additionally, it will be exhibited at "Isetan Salone" (1-2F Galleria, 9-7-4 Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo), which opens in Tokyo Midtown, from April 3 (Friday) to April 9 (Thursday).
