A Sleek, Coupe-Like Bodyline
The exterior design, unlike previous models, is characterized by a sleek, coupe-like bodyline. It features a gently sloping C-pillar and a smoothly rising shoulder line, design elements not seen in Volvos before.
The interior retains the acclaimed simple and functional Scandinavian design, while blending in luxury and playfulness to create an even more comfortable space. Compared to the previous model, the rear legroom has increased by 30mm, and the trunk opening is 107mm wider, significantly improving usability.
The platform has also been revamped. Two types of chassis are available, with different damper and front/rear subframe specifications. One is the "Dynamic Chassis" for Europe, which balances responsive, quick handling with a comfortable ride. The "Comfort Chassis" for North America and Asia is characterized by its smooth ride on rough roads.
Packed with the Latest Safety Features
The engine lineup is topped by a 3-liter turbo with a maximum output of 304ps, alongside a newly developed direct-injection 2-liter turbo and two types of 2.4-liter 5-cylinder turbo diesels. Within the first year of production, an improved 2-liter turbo with 240 horsepower, two types of 1.6-liter turbos, and a 1.6-liter diesel are planned. All models come with a 6-speed manual transmission, while gasoline models offer a 6-speed Powershift, and turbo-diesel models feature a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Volvo's signature safety has, of course, also been enhanced. The Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) is introduced, along with a newly developed Corner Traction Control for smoother cornering. Features such as "City Safety" to avoid or mitigate rear-end collisions, and "Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake & Pedestrian Automatic Avoidance" to avoid pedestrian collisions at low speeds are also adopted.
Deliveries of this new S60 are scheduled to begin in early summer 2010.
