Renault Adds Turbo + Manual Transmission Model to Lutecia

Renault Japon is introducing a manual transmission model to its compact hatchback, the Lutecia. This popular grade, which has been selling well in France since the current model's launch, is now arriving in Japan.

Driving a Downsized Engine with a Manual Transmission

Renault Japon will launch a new specification for the Lutecia, its compact hatchback model introduced in Japan in 2013. The Zen, the most basic grade, will be available with a 5-speed manual transmission paired with a 0.9-liter turbo engine, starting January 8th.

While the Lutecia's powertrain typically features a 1.2-liter inline 4-cylinder turbo engine with a 6-speed Efficient Dual Clutch transmission (excluding the high-performance R.S. model), this manual Zen model is equipped with an even more compact 0.9-liter inline 3-cylinder engine.

The newly introduced 3-cylinder power unit, while smaller in displacement, is equipped with a turbocharger and boasts an output of 90 ps and 135 Nm of torque, claimed to be equivalent to a 1.4-liter engine. Renault explains that this downsized engine is easy to handle in city driving, as 90 percent of its maximum torque is available from a low 1,650 rpm.

It also features a start-stop system to improve fuel efficiency and hill start assist, which holds the vehicle for a few seconds after releasing the brake to support uphill starts.

While the equipment level generally follows the existing basic Zen model, it has been enhanced with a sportier aesthetic to cater to users specifically seeking a manual transmission. This includes black 16-inch alloy wheels and chrome finishers, differentiating it from the 1.2-liter model.

Five body colors are available, including the signature Blue de France. Priced at 2.08 million yen, it is also more affordable than the 1.2-liter model. This new manual model is poised to serve as a new entry-level option for users seeking a manual transmission from Renault.
