A Concept Model Hinting at the Future of SUVs
Mercedes-Benz opened its engineering center in Beijing in November. Unveiled to commemorate its opening was the "G Code" study model. Mercedes calls this a Sports Utility Coupe (SUC), presenting it as one vision for the sporty SUV of the future. While not a model appearing immediately, it should hold clues to Mercedes' future SUV variations.

Developed at the Beijing Engineering Center
The Mercedes-Benz engineering center established in Beijing is expected to primarily focus on the design development of next-generation models for the Chinese market. There are already four such advanced development bases worldwide. Beijing will create new model and mobility concepts, incorporating Asian culture and trends, in collaboration with the design center in Sindelfingen.
The "G Code" design study, revealed simultaneously with the facility's unveiling, is a futuristic compact SUV proposal aimed at stimulating the Chinese market. It measures 4,100mm in length and 1,900mm in width, with a height of 1,500mm. This is slightly more compact than the GLA-Class, which is 4,430mm long and has already launched in Japan. Its 2+2 sporty appearance, initially resembling a two-door coupe, is striking.
The vehicle features 21-inch alloy wheels with aluminum rims and carbon fiber spokes, positioned at the four corners. Its SUV-like form, with a raised ride height suggesting powerful performance, is complemented by a greenhouse design where the A-pillars are blacked out, creating the illusion of a continuous glass surface. This is matched by a roof design inspired by motorboats, and rear doors that open outwards, a feature notable for their minimal surface area.
With such captivating futuristic design, Mercedes refers to the G Code as an "SUC," or Sports Utility Coupe, a model tailored for the Chinese market.

Futuristic Interior and Exterior
The large grille, unmistakably identifying it as a Mercedes, is called a multi-layer star matrix display and shows the vehicle's status holographically.
When the G Code is parked, the blue color gently pulses. In EV mode, digital stars on the grille move towards the center. In Hybrid Eco mode, the stars move similarly but change to a purple hue. In the most powerful Hybrid Sport mode, the entire grille turns a vibrant red, with the stars appearing to shoot outwards, showcasing a playful element.
The sleek, full LED headlamps are equipped with two digital cameras, optimizing illumination based on driving conditions. The daytime running lights illuminate in a design reminiscent of the letter "G." Meanwhile, the taillights utilize a horizontal LED light strip, an integrated design connecting the rear body sides with a single line, expressing turn signals, taillights, and brake lights through various illuminations.
The interior is equally futuristic. The steering control, not wheel-shaped, is foldable, with a handle resembling an aircraft's control column extending from the dashboard. The meters rise as a large, wide display on the dashboard, presenting information within it.
A transparent auxiliary display is also located in front of what could be called the steering control column. Naturally, it integrates with smartphones, presenting a cockpit that beautifully expresses a futuristic digital world.
Images from the rearview camera are overlaid on the widescreen display, providing surrounding surveillance via 360-degree 3D cameras, radar, infrared scanners, and GPS data, while also exchanging information with traffic infrastructure. This is presented as the most innovative and efficient driving assistance.

Although Aimed at the Chinese Market
While ensuring lightness, durability, and practicality through features like dirt-resistant flooring and carbon shell seats suitable for an SUV, soft leather upholstery on the seats and armrests enhances comfort and quality. Furthermore, the interior lighting is linked to the radiator grille's display visualization, with star motifs and color schemes reflected in the large widescreen display and interior lighting.
It offers comfortable space for four adults, and the rear seats fold down to create a flat cargo area when more luggage space is needed, further enhancing practicality.
While the specific powertrain is not disclosed, it's designed as a hybrid system: driving only the rear wheels in EV mode, the front wheels in engine mode, and both in all-wheel-drive. Furthermore, during sporty driving, it offers an exciting exhaust sound through digital tuning, allowing for an experience of the expansive sound characteristic of sports cars.
Although many features incorporate futuristic playfulness, the G Code hides hints of compact SUV design. Mercedes emphasizes its suitability for the Chinese market, but it will be important to continue watching the Beijing engineering center to see how trends and sensibilities from this major market are reflected in global models.
