Streamlined Grade Lineup

Mercedes-Benz Japan has announced improvements to its four-door coupe model, the CLS Class, and its wagon variant, the CLS Shooting Brake, commencing domestic sales.

This update sees a review of the grade structure. The coupe is now available in three variants: CLS 550, CLS 63 AMG S, and CLS 63 AMG S 4MATIC. The Shooting Brake is offered in two variants: CLS 550 4MATIC Shooting Brake and CLS 63 AMG S 4MATIC Shooting Brake. Consequently, the standard model is now exclusively the CLS 550, powered by a 4.7-liter V8 twin-turbo engine, while the Shooting Brake variants are focused on all-wheel-drive models.

One of the key improvements is the adoption of "MULTIBEAM LED headlights," renowned for their high resolution and precision.

These are standard on all models. Utilizing a stereo multi-purpose camera located inside the windshield and four control units, they detect the traffic situation ahead approximately 100 times per second. Each of the 24 high-performance LEDs per side is individually controlled instantaneously, maximizing the headlight beam range without dazzling preceding or oncoming vehicles. Additionally, the "Active Curve System" uses information from the stereo multi-purpose camera to swivel the low beams outwards by up to 12 degrees when entering or exiting corners, thereby maximizing visibility in the direction of travel.

The CLS 550 coupe newly adopts the newly developed 9-speed automatic transmission, "9G-TRONIC." Mercedes explains that this multi-gear system delivers a direct, quick, and sporty shifting feel, along with excellent energy efficiency and a comfortable ride. The all-wheel-drive CLS 550 4MATIC Shooting Brake continues to be equipped with the conventional 7-speed automatic transmission, "7G-TRONIC PLUS."

State-of-the-Art Devices for Semi-Autonomous Driving Now Standard

Advanced driver assistance systems, including the "Radar Safety Package," have also been upgraded.

The new CLS Class is equipped with a multi-purpose camera capable of monitoring the general surroundings up to 500 meters away, a camera that captures a three-dimensional view of the area approximately 50 meters ahead, and a total of six radar sensors for short, medium, and long distances. This creates a comprehensive intelligent system that covers 360 degrees around the vehicle.

Data from these radars is analyzed by the system to detect and pinpoint the location of preceding vehicles, crossing vehicles, rear vehicles, oncoming traffic, and pedestrians. The system then assesses the situation and enables "partial autonomous driving" by automatically assisting with acceleration, braking, and steering.

The design of the instrument panel has also been revised with changes to the COMAND system display. The new display transitions from the traditional in-dash design to an on-dash type, and its larger 8-inch screen enhances visibility. Car connectivity has also been improved, adding Wi-Fi tethering functionality in addition to Bluetooth, enabling high-speed data communication.

Pricing for the new CLS Class starts at 12.24 million yen for the CLS 550 coupe, 18.317 million yen for the CLS 63 AMG S, and 18.471 million yen for the CLS 63 AMG S 4MATIC. The Shooting Brake variants are priced at 12.754 million yen for the CLS 550 4MATIC and 18.808 million yen for the CLS 63 AMG S 4MATIC. Reservations are now open, with deliveries scheduled to begin in mid-November.
