Spacious Cabin Leveraging the FF Layout

The "2 Series Active Tourer" is a new type of premium compact car unlike any BMW before it.

While it retains BMW's signature styling and sporty driving dynamics, it adopts a packaging concept called "SAT (Sports Activity Tourer)" that utilizes the FF-based layout to achieve an expansive interior space and high functionality and comfort, similar to an MPV. Despite its manageable dimensions of 1,800mm in width and 1,550mm in height, which easily fit into typical Japanese mechanical parking garages, the cabin is remarkably spacious, more akin to an MPV than a compact car.

The size of the Active Tourer, with its 4,350mm length, can be understood by hearing that it is larger than the "1 Series" but slightly smaller than the "X1". While it's large for a compact car, it's smaller than the popular "compact crossover" models.

The body, centered around a long wheelbase of 2,670mm, is sportier than one might expect. This is largely due to the short front overhang, which creates a dynamic front end, and the coupe-like roofline. The front fascia features the signature kidney grille, and LED front headlights are standard on all models for safety.

The characteristic spacious cabin employs a semi-command seating position with a slightly elevated seating height, offering excellent ingress/egress and forward visibility. Furthermore, the rear seats provide ample knee room and can slide 130mm and recline in three stages, ensuring passenger comfort. The luggage compartment can be expanded from a standard 468 liters to a maximum of 1,510 liters, offering high cargo capacity.

Equipped with Next-Generation Modular Engine

The biggest highlight of the 2 Series Active Tourer is its adoption of BMW's first front-wheel-drive system, enabling the combination of a compact body and a spacious interior.MINIBMW has gained experience in developing front-wheel-drive models through the development of MINI, but this is the first front-wheel-drive model to bear the BMW brand name, attracting significant attention. While some parts are shared with MINI, the chassis has been newly developed.

The powertrain features a new generation of modular engines. These engines utilize cylinders with a displacement of 500cc each, allowing for a wide range of power outputs depending on the total displacement. The 2 Series Active Tourer is equipped with a 1,500cc 3-cylinder turbo engine and a 2,000cc 4-cylinder turbo engine.

The "218i Active Tourer" is powered by the same 1,500cc 3-cylinder turbo engine found in the BMW "i8". It produces a maximum output of 136 ps at 4400 rpm and a maximum torque of 220 Nm between 1250-4300 rpm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Fuel efficiency in the JC08 mode is 16.8 km/l. Three trim lines are available depending on the equipment: Standard, Luxury, and M Sport.

Meanwhile, the 2-liter 4-cylinder turbo is installed in the "225i xDrive Active Tourer". It boasts a maximum output of 231 ps at 4750 rpm and a maximum torque of 35.6 kgm at 1250-4500 rpm. This model features an 8-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive. It is offered exclusively in the M Sport trim, clearly indicating its sporty positioning.

BMW's advanced safety features such as "Driving Assistant," an 8.8-inch wide control display, HDD navigation system, and iDrive controller are standard on all models. Pricing starts at 3.32 million yen for the 218i and ranges up to 3.68 million yen, while the 225i is priced at 4.94 million yen. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in December.
