STOP! A SUNBURN! Part 3: Effective Pre- and After-Care to Prevent Lasting Damage

Breaking New Ground in Every Aspect

The 7 Series, the pinnacle of BMW's luxury saloon lineup, enters its fifth generation with a new model that is said to break new ground in styling, luxury, and driving dynamics.

Key design keywords are 'natural presence,' 'even greater sportiness,' and 'complete elegance.' The signature BMW kidney grille is more prominent, complemented by a wide body and sculpted, flowing lines, presenting an unmistakable new-generation 7 Series.

Inside, the interior features an electronic automatic transmission selector lever on the center console, similar to the latest BMW models like the X5 and X6. The driver-oriented space is enhanced by the innovative 'iDrive' control system, operated with a mouse-like feel, and the multifunction steering wheel, pioneered in the previous 7 Series.

Initially, the engine lineup will include three options: a 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo gasoline engine (407 ps), a 3-liter inline-6 twin-turbo gasoline engine (326 ps), and a 3-liter inline-6 turbo diesel engine (245 ps). All will be paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The new model features a completely revised suspension for improved driving performance, along with enhanced 'Active Steering' that varies the steering gear ratio according to vehicle speed. By steering the rear wheels in addition to the front, the car achieves greater maneuverability at low speeds and enhanced stability at high speeds.

Furthermore, advanced features such as cruise control with 'Stop & Go' function that follows the vehicle ahead, 'Lane Departure Warning' to prevent unintended lane changes, and 'Night Vision' to improve visibility during night driving will be available.

The new 7 Series is set to launch in Europe in November. Details regarding its introduction to Japan have not yet been announced.

A limousine version with a 140mm longer wheelbase will also be offered.

BRAND HISTORY
Instantly recognizable by its 'kidney grille' and four round headlights, BMW has consistently held a high position in the Japanese import car market. Yet, surprisingly few might know the immediate meaning behind its name.

Bayerische Motoren Werke. Literally translated, it means 'Bavarian Engine Works.' Its predecessor, Rapp Motorenwerke, was an aircraft engine manufacturer founded in Bavaria, Germany, in 1913 by Karl Friedrich Rapp. Rapp partnered with fellow Bavarian aircraft maker Otto-Flugzeugwerke to achieve business success. In 1916, it was renamed Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH. Two years later, it reorganized as a stock corporation and registered its propeller logo, inspired by the blue skies and white clouds of Bavaria.

BMW continued to enhance its presence through innovative technology, but the defeat in World War I forced the cessation of aircraft engine production. BMW then channeled its expertise into motorcycles, gaining attention in 1923 with the shaft-driven 'BMW R32.' Not content with this, the company acquired Dixi, a licensee of the Austin Seven. This provided a foothold in the automotive business, and in 1929, BMW launched the 'BMW 3/15 PS,' marking the start of its history as an automobile manufacturer.

Incidentally, Otto-Flugzeugwerke, which had a close relationship with BMW, was founded by Gustav Otto, the son of Nikolaus August Otto, who established the theory of the internal combustion engine. This historical connection likely explains BMW's continued focus on internal combustion engines.
