Customizable design thanks to separate inner frame and exterior panels

The Daihatsu "Copen," a two-seater open-top sports car that has set itself apart from other kei cars with its lightweight body, has been in production for 10 years, from 2002 to 2012. After a hiatus of approximately two years, the second generation has finally arrived.

The models announced this time are two design variants: the sports car-style "Robe" and the SUV-like "X Model."concept models that appeared at last November's Tokyo Motor ShowThey share almost the same design as the concept models that appeared at last November's Tokyo Motor Show. First to be released is the "Robe," which expresses dynamism and fluidity, while the "X Model," said to represent an active feel, is scheduled for release this autumn.

Its most significant feature is the ability to change its design even after purchase, by separating the internal structure from the exterior panels. The newly adopted "Dress Formation" structure, which treats the exterior panels as a collection of 13 resin parts, allows for customization to the owner's preferences.

This not only allows for changes in appearance but also, depending on the design, can even alter the aerodynamic characteristics. As one design proposal, a model resembling the previous Copen, featuring round headlights, was also unveiled.

Communication space for owners also planned

The body measures 3,395mm in length, 1,475mm in width, and 1,280mm in height. The powertrain is a 0.66-liter 3-cylinder turbo engine, delivering a maximum output of 47kW (64ps) at 6,400rpm and a maximum torque of 92Nm (9.4kgm) at 3,200rpm. Both manual and CVT models are available, with the CVT model featuring an idling stop function.

The structural frame utilizes the new "D Frame." This frame alone ensures the high rigidity required for a sports car, while dedicated tuning of the suspension and powertrain is said to have improved handling stability and ride comfort.

Third design proposal adopts a look reminiscent of the previous model

Daihatsu is establishing "Copen Sites" nationwide, which serve as certified shops for enjoying the Copen and act as driver salons. Furthermore, a manufacturer-direct "Local Base" is planned to open in Kamakura as an information dissemination hub for enjoying the Copen's open-top car lifestyle. Here, user feedback will be incorporated into product development through communication, and it will also function as a cafe, with various events planned.

At the "Copen Factory," where the new Copen is manufactured, the production line is visible through glass walls, and factory tours for owners are scheduled to begin this summer.

The body colors include Liquid Silver Metallic and Jaune Yellow, among eight available options. The price for the manual model is 1,819,800 yen, and for the CVT model, it is 1,798,200 yen.
