Audi Japan announced on June 10th that it has added models equipped with the Cylinder On Demand (COD) system to its lineup of the most compact three-door hatchback, theA1, and the five-door hatchback,A1 Sportback, and has begun sales.

Improved Output, Fuel Efficiency, and Reduced CO2 Emissions
The cylinder deactivation technology, "Cylinder On Demand (COD)," which has already been featured in Audi's "S6," "S7",S8", and the "A3," has finally been adopted for the "A1."
The 1.4-liter direct-injection turbo Cylinder On Demand engine now available for the A1 is the same as that used in the "A3 Sportback 1.4 TFSI cod" and " A3 Sedan 1.4 TFSI cod". When the engine load is low, such as during highway cruising, the inner two of the four cylinders are automatically deactivated. This contributes to reduced CO2 emissions and improved fuel economy while enhancing overall output.
Both the "A1 1.4TFSI cod" and "A1 Sportback 1.4TFSI cod" pair this 1.4 TFSI cod engine with a 7-speed S tronic transmission, driving the front wheels. The maximum output has been increased by 18 ps to 103 kW (140 ps) compared to the conventional "1.4TFSI" without cylinder deactivation, and the maximum torque is 50 Nm greater at 250 Nm.
Despite this higher output, CO2 emissions are reduced compared to the base grade, and the JC08 mode fuel economy is 20.5 km/L. The previously adopted idling stop system and energy regeneration system are also carried over.
The prices for both A1 models with COD are increased by 330,000 yen, making the three-door "A1 1.4TFSI cod" 3.14 million yen and the five-door "A1 Sportback 1.4TFSI cod" 3.34 million yen.
