Cherokee: A Full Model Change After Six Years
Fiat Chrysler Japan will launch the fourth-generation new Cherokee in Japan on Saturday, May 17. The new model, which marks a full model change after six years, is characterized by a departure from the boxy, tough Jeep design of the past, adopting a modern form that can be described as urban.

The Fourth Generation Undergoes a Dramatic Transformation
The Jeep Cherokee has consistently been characterized by its high-riding, boxy form. While the second generation, projecting the image of the Wrangler, adopted a slightly rounded design, it consistently expressed a tough, off-road capability suitable for any road or weather condition through its exterior.
However,New York Auto Show 2013the new model, the fourth generation, which made its world premiere at the show, has taken a significant turn towards a stylish direction, departing from the universally recognizable Cherokee design to achieve a sophisticated form that suits urban landscapes.
Due to its radical transformation, there were many reports of initial confusion among existing "Liberty" (Cherokee in Japan) users in North America. However, since its US launch last November, sales have been strong, proving the success of this full model change. Incidentally, the Cherokee was sold as "Liberty" for two generations in North America, but the "Cherokee" name has been revived for this fourth generation.
When introducing the new Jeep Cherokee, it's impossible not to mention its revolutionary exterior design. While the traditional Jeep "7-slot grille" and the trapezoidal front and rear fender designs evoke Jeep's DNA, if you remove these iconic Jeep elements and the high ride height, the new "Jeep Cherokee" looks like a wild sports car.
The greenhouse, following the extremely raked A-pillars, extends smoothly to the rear, unlike that of a typical SUV. The integration of the front hood and grille is also a first for Jeep. Jeep calls this shape the "Waterfall Hood."
The lighting area, where it's hard to tell at first glance where the headlights are, is also a characteristic of the new Cherokee.
Viewed from the front, the uppermost lights are LED clearance lamps, the headlights are positioned above the bumper, and the lowermost position, embedded in the bumper, serves as fog lights.
Furthermore, the taillights adopt a new design that is difficult to find commonality with previous Jeeps, befitting a new generation.
In contrast to the exterior, the interior development focused on four key areas: emotional design, high-quality materials, cutting-edge technology, and functional storage space. While the interior may appear more conventional compared to the dramatically transformed exterior, the quality of the interior has significantly improved.

Equipped with a Reputable Engine and the Latest 4x4 Devices
The left and right meters are analog, but their centers are equipped with LCD displays showing various functions. Additionally, the familiar "Uconnect" 8.4-inch touchscreen display from Chrysler is centrally located on the console, allowing for integrated control of navigation, air conditioning, seat heaters, and connection of smartphones and digital audio players, enabling intuitive operation of various functions.
The engine lineup includes two options: the "TigerShark MultiAir 2" 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder, producing a maximum output of 130 kW (177 ps) and a maximum torque of 229 Nm (23.4 kgm), installed in the entry-level FF Longitude model; and the "3.2L Pentastar Engine" 3.2-liter V6, producing a maximum output of 200 kW (272 ps) and a maximum torque of 315 Nm (32.1 kgm), installed in the 4WD Trailhawk and Limited models.
This "3.2L Pentastar Engine" is based on the 3.6-liter engine that powers the "Grand Cherokee" and "Wrangler", which has won Ward's "10 Best Engines" award for three consecutive years. Both the 2.4-liter and 3.2-liter engines are paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission, a first for the Chrysler Group.
Meanwhile, the 4WD system, indispensable when discussing "Jeep," also incorporates the latest devices. The new Jeep Cherokee offers two types of 4x4 systems depending on the grade. The "Jeep Active Drive II," equipped with a 2-speed power transfer unit and a 4Low mode (transfer case) for use in mud or rocky terrain, is installed in the Limited model. The Trailhawk features the "Jeep Active Drive Lock," which includes a "locking rear differential" for even more powerful off-road performance.
Both the Limited and Trailhawk models, which feature these 4x4 systems, are equipped with the "Jeep Selec-Terrain System." Selec-Terrain allows the driver to select from five modes – "Auto," "Snow," "Sport," "Sand/Mud," and "Rock" – to suit road conditions, weather, and driving situations. As a "Jeep," it is naturally expected to ensure class-leading performance in all weather and road conditions. These electronic devices are key mechanisms that allow the Cherokee to truly perform as a Jeep.

Highly Praised Safety Features
The new Cherokee has also made significant advancements in safety. It is equipped with over 70 safety features, the most for a Jeep, and its body utilizes high-strength steel plates at an impressive 65 percent. It has been selected as an "IIHS Top Safety Pick+" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and has received the highest rating in US crash tests. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that it has achieved the highest rating of 5 stars in Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) for the first time for a Jeep.
In addition, it incorporates the latest safety equipment and driver-assistance systems, such as "Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go" and "Lane Departure Warning Plus," similar to passenger cars, as well as "ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist," significantly improving everyday usability.
The fact that all models will be introduced with right-hand drive specifications, as before, will also be welcome news for Japanese users.
When people hear "Jeep," many might imagine a tough, rugged design and a harsh ride. However, the new Cherokee has been finished as a model with modern interior and exterior, contemporary safety standards, and is fully capable of accommodating those switching from passenger cars. Yet, its renowned 4x4 capability, which excels in any field or weather, remains. It is truly an all-rounder, offering the highest performance as a vehicle that can be driven on public roads, while also being easily usable as a daily companion.
