The Most Powerful G-Class Off-Roader Ever Produced for the Market
Since its debut in 1979, the G-Class has cultivated a devoted following for its exceptional off-road capability and the same reliability found in other Mercedes vehicles. A model embodying the culmination of its 35-year history has now arrived, and its introduction to Japan has been announced.
TheG 63 AMG 6x6is the ultimate off-road vehicle, incorporating the specialized vehicle technology honed through the development of military and armored vehicles supplied worldwide. Mercedes-Benz itself refers to this machine as an "off-road monster." It features six-wheel drive and five differential locks.
Its dimensions are truly monstrous: approximately 6 meters long, over 2 meters wide, and about 2.3 meters high. The 6-wheel-drive system is adapted from technology used in military models supplied to the Australian army. Thanks to "portal axles," developed based on armored vehicle technology, it boasts a ground clearance of 460mm and a wading depth of 1,000mm, performance roughly double that of the production model "G 63 AMG."
The suspension utilizes reinforced coil springs found in armored vehicles and gas-filled dampers developed for rally racing. This combination reportedly delivers exceptional driving performance and superior handling.
Furthermore, it is equipped with the world's first "tire pressure control system" for a passenger vehicle. This system allows the driver to adjust the air pressure in all six tires via switches located above the driver's seat. While the normal pressure is set at 3.0 bar, it can be reduced to 0.5 bar on soft surfaces like deserts, increasing the tire contact area and preventing the vehicle from sinking. Notably, the deflation speed is rapid, reducing pressure to 0.5 bar in under 20 seconds, compared to the approximately 10 minutes required for a normal truck.

Strictly Limited to 5 Units
The powertrain features AMG's latest pride: a 5.5-liter V8 direct-injection twin-turbo engine producing a maximum output of 400 kW (544 hp) and peak torque of 760 Nm, paired with the agile 7-speed automatic transmission "AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS."
Its exterior is a monster that commands attention, while the interior reveals a luxurious cabin befitting an AMG model. The interior, lavishly appointed with Mercedes-Benz's finest designo leather, adopts a four-seat configuration with individual seats. The rear seats are equipped with electric recliners featuring seat heating and ventilation, as well as a rear entertainment system, creating an exceptionally luxurious space that belies its rugged, imposing exterior.
Despite being an extremely limited production model, it includes Japan-specific features such as a COMAND display with Japanese language support and a 360-degree camera system useful in tight spaces. Due to the time-consuming production process, it is air-freighted upon completion, highlighting its special nature. However, like other Mercedes-Benz vehicles, it comes with a three-year warranty and complimentary "Mercedes-Care" service. Furthermore, in the event of a major issue, a specialized mechanic will fly in from Germany to provide assistance.
In Japan, the G 63 AMG 6x6 will be sold in a limited run of just five units, priced at 80 million yen (including tax) for the left-hand drive model only. Orders will be accepted until August 31, 2014, through the nationwide network of authorized Mercedes-Benz dealerships. Currently, Japan is the sole market in Asia where this vehicle will be available.
