Compact SUV "EcoSport" Arrives
The compact SUV "EcoSport," which Ford Japan will begin introducing on May 31st, is the fourth global product developed under Ford's ongoing "One Ford" strategy. Its character as a B-segment SUV, unlike anything seen before, possesses a distinct presence that shines amidst the global crossover and SUV boom.

A Capable Compact SUV
The Ford compact SUV "EcoSport," newly added to the B-segment lineup, follows the "Kuga" and "Focus", as well as the "Fiesta" introduced this year, and is a global model sold in approximately 100 countries.
Like the Fiesta, the EcoSport was developed based on the "B Car Platform" and has been finished quite compactly, measuring 4,195 x 1,765 x 1,655mm in length x width x height. With Ford's best-selling SUV, the "Explorer", the global Kuga, and the newly launched EcoSport, Ford now covers almost all segments with its lineup, from full-size and mid-size to compact sizes.
Incidentally, in terms of length, there is an 825mm difference between the EcoSport and the largest Explorer, and a 345mm difference with the Kuga. For comparison, its size overlaps with B-segment SUVs and crossover models around 4 meters in length, such as the Peugeot "2008" and Renault "Captur", and the "MINI Countryman", which are considered rivals in the same compact SUV class.
The exterior condenses SUV functionality and off-road capability into a compact car size, along with a tough, tool-like image. The front face, featuring a large trapezoidal grille, is said to be an evolution of the "Kinetic Design" known as the "New Global Design Language," Ford's new generation design cue. Its solid image, as if carved from a block of metal, and its stable form with large 205/60R16 tires positioned at the four corners give it a sturdy appearance despite its small size.
At first glance, there appears to be no lever for opening the rear gate, but it is cleverly integrated into the design, combined with the rear combination lamp on the right side. Furthermore, the full-size spare tire mounted on the rear gate is a refreshingly retro touch that gives it a tough, unmistakably SUV impression. This attention to detail and the SUV-like styling are testaments to Ford's evolved design.

Spacious Interior in a Compact Body
The powertrain features a 1.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine producing a maximum output of 82kW (111ps) and a maximum torque of 140Nm (14.3kgm), paired with the latest 6-speed PowerShift dual-clutch transmission. Although only front-wheel-drive models are available, the minimum ground clearance is a substantial 180mm, rivaling larger, more rugged SUVs. The approach and departure angles, crucial for off-road capability, are 25 and 35 degrees respectively. Furthermore, clever layout of the engine compartment's electrical systems and air intake allows for potential operation in water up to 550mm deep.
The 1.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, producing 82kW (111ps), is a conventional gasoline engine (premium fuel required) but employs Vi-VCT, a variable valve timing system that independently controls intake and exhaust valves. With a SelectShift mode for manual operation, it delivers ample performance for the vehicle's 1,270kg weight. Despite being an SUV, its fuel efficiency of 14.5km per liter is also a significant appeal.
The interior offers a surprisingly spacious cabin, exceeding expectations for its compact body. The distinctive driver's area design follows Ford's design language seen in previous global models, making it instantly recognizable as a Ford.
At the center of the three-dimensional dashboard is the "SYNC" advanced connectivity technology, which allows easy connection of audio players and Bluetooth-compatible mobile phones, controllable via steering wheel switches or voice commands (in English). It also includes comfort features beyond what might be expected for a B-segment entry model, such as auto speed control, auto air conditioning, smart keyless entry, auto headlights, and rain-sensing wipers, all as standard.
The "EcoSport" also does not compromise on safety. In addition to ABS, Emergency Brake Assist, and ESP (Electronic Stability Program), it is equipped with Hill Start Assist, which automatically applies the brakes when stopped on an incline to prevent rollback upon restarting. Hill Start Assist is particularly beneficial for dual-clutch transmissions, where the clutch disengages when stopped.
A total of seven airbags, including knee and side curtain airbags, are standard to protect occupants from collision impact. The commitment to safety appears to be on par with higher-class vehicles.
It also comes with features beneficial for tall SUVs. The reverse sensing system, which detects obstacles behind the vehicle when reversing, should significantly reduce driver stress during parking and maneuvering.

Packed with Ford's First-Class Hospitality
Lastly, the luggage space, which SUV users are most concerned about along with off-road performance, is another highlight of the EcoSport. Despite its compact body, it offers a luggage capacity of 333 liters for normal use with five occupants, achieved by mounting the spare tire on the back. Furthermore, by folding the 60:40 split-folding rear seats, the capacity can be expanded to a maximum of 1,238 liters, accommodating items like bicycles and large appliances.
In addition to these versatile seat arrangements, the 20 storage compartments for small items throughout the cabin are a welcome consideration for active SUV owners.
It features a slide-out drawer under the seats, as well as cup holders in the door pockets and center console. The glove box, equipped with a cooling function, can hold six 350ml cans, demonstrating a wealth of features to enhance daily life. This can be seen as Ford's first-class hospitality, honed by its long history of SUV manufacturing.
In the highly competitive compact SUV segment, where domestic manufacturers and import brands alike vie for attention, the Ford EcoSport stands out with its unique styling and appealing functionality. As a brand originating from America, the home of SUVs, how will it contend with its established rivals? Its much-anticipated Japanese launch begins on May 31st.
