The 2 Series Coupe Arrives in Japan

BMW has announced the domestic launch of the premium compact coupe, the1 Series Coupe, which succeeds the2 Series Coupe, to be released on February 26th. The "2 Series Coupe" follows BMW's new strategy of assigning odd numbers to sedans and station wagons, and even numbers to sports models like coupes.BMW's new model, born under a new strategy. It boasts a sharp, stylish body design and a sporty driving experience that inherits the DNA of the 02 Series (nicknamed "Maruni"), born in 1966 and still remembered as a classic.

Wider and Lower Proportions for Enhanced Sportiness

The "2 Series Coupe," now launched in Japan, is the successor to the "1 Series Coupe," which has sold over 150,000 units worldwide. It has been established as a new series, in line with BMW's new strategy of assigning even numbers to coupe models.

The new 2 Series is the only rear-wheel-drive model in the compact segment, ensuring BMW's signature 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution. While positioned as BMW's entry-level sports model, it possesses a character befitting the "joy of driving" catchphrase, inherited from the 1600-2, the ancestor of the "2 Series," which debuted in 1966.

The powertrain combines the familiar TwinPower Turbo engine with a newly developed 8-speed automatic transmission.

Standard features include the "iDrive Navigation System" with a touchpad for text input, "Collision Warning and Mitigation Brake" with pedestrian detection, "BMW SOS Call" for occupant safety and vehicle monitoring via an onboard communication module, and "BMW Teleservices" to notify authorized dealers of vehicle maintenance information, enhancing safety and convenience.

The wide and massive exterior design, instantly recognizable as a BMW, is characterized by dynamic character lines along the shoulder. It features a classic FR form with the driver positioned near the midpoint of the wheelbase, resulting in a highly textured appearance that can be described as sculptural. The previously vertically oriented headlights have been replaced with sharp, keen, slit-like designs, within which are embedded round four-light headlamps.

The body dimensions are announced as 4,440mm in length, 1,775mm in width, and 1,420mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,690mm. Compared to the previous "120i Coupe," this represents an increase of 70mm in length, 25mm in width, and 30mm in wheelbase, while the height has been reduced by 35mm. The low and wide impression is a result of these dimensions, making it feel even sportier than the 1 Series Coupe.

The interior adopts BMW's familiar cockpit design, with the center console angled towards the driver. Front headroom has been increased by 6mm, rear legroom by 21mm, and the space for ingress and egress to the rear seats has been widened by 11mm. Additionally, an optional 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat is available, along with a 20-liter increase in luggage capacity and a 38mm wider trunk opening. Despite being a 2-door model prioritizing design, improvements in comfort and ease of access suggest enhanced practicality.
