Equipped with a New Inline-6 Turbo Unit

BMW has announced the Japanese market introduction of the latest models in its high-performance "M" series, the M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe. The fifth generation of these evolved models sees the M3 Sedan joined by the M4 Coupe, the successor to the previous M3 Coupe, which is newly derived from the new 4 Series Coupe. The new 4 Series Coupemarks the arrival of the M4 Coupe.

The powertrain features a newly developed 3.0-liter inline-6 twin-turbo engine producing a maximum output of 317 kW (431 hp). Furthermore, the extensive use of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) and lightweight aluminum in the body and suspension achieves both exceptional driving dynamics and efficiency.

Since its debut in 1986, the M3 has long established itself as the benchmark in BMW's high-performance sports car segment. The fifth generation of this evolved model sees a lineup change, with the addition of the four-door M3 Sedan and the M4 Coupe, the successor to the previous M3 Coupe, born from the 4 Series.

Perhaps the most noteworthy change in these new models is the alteration of the powertrain. The switch has finally been made from the naturally aspirated engines of previous generations to a twin-turbo unit. The newly developed 3.0-liter inline-6 twin-turbo engine boasts high output and a high revving character, delivering a feeling akin to a naturally aspirated engine.

The maximum output is 317 kW (431 hp) delivered between 5,500-7,300 rpm, with a maximum engine speed set at 7,600 rpm. A maximum torque of 550 Nm (56.1 kgm) is delivered flatly across a wide range from 1,850-5500 rpm. As a result, the 0-100 km/h acceleration time is officially stated as a mere 4.1 seconds for both models.

For weight reduction, the new models extensively utilize CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) and lightweight aluminum in the body and suspension. By incorporating parts such as a CFRP roof and driveshaft, and aluminum front side panels and hood, the M4 Coupe has achieved an approximately 80 kg weight reduction compared to the previous M3 Coupe. The use of CFRP parts not only reduces weight but also increases rigidity in various areas, contributing to improved driving dynamics.

Both vehicles are equipped with a 7-speed M DCT (dual-clutch) transmission, which ensures uninterrupted acceleration without loss of traction during gear changes. The M4 Coupe also offers an optional 6-speed manual transmission with a throttle-blipping function that automatically raises engine revs during downshifts for smoother gear changes.

Technologies Designed for Circuit Performance

During the development of the M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe, touring car drivers Bruno Spengler and Timo Glock participated in test drives to fine-tune the vehicle setup. This dedication reflects BMW's commitment to achieving superior performance on the circuit.BMW'scommitment.

Additionally, the cars feature advanced driver-assistance technologies such as the "Active M Differential," which detects intervention timing from various data and freely distributes power between the left and right rear wheels, and the electric power steering "M Servotronic," which provides precise feedback from the road and allows selection of assist modes based on driving conditions. A smartphone app, "BMW M Laptimer," is also available to acquire diverse driving data.

The exterior also speaks to the car's performance. The power dome on the hood evokes the strength of the turbo unit housed beneath and also accommodates the intercooler. The three large air intakes in the front apron not only emphasize the sporty front-end design but also play a crucial role in cooling the engine and the powerful brake system. In the M4 Coupe, the rear spoiler is integrated into the trunk lid, creating a lightweight and distinctive tail-end design that symbolizes the M4.

Reservations for the M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe, which began on February 19th, are scheduled for delivery starting in July of this year. Including 8% consumption tax, the M3 Sedan is priced at 11.04 million yen, available only with a right-hand drive and 7-speed M DCT combination. The M4 Coupe, with a choice of left or right-hand drive, is priced at 10.75 million yen for the 6-speed manual and 11.26 million yen for the right-hand drive 7-speed M DCT specification.
