Achieves 16.4 km/L Fuel Efficiency, Eligible for Eco-Car Tax Reductions

Last year,Detroit Motor Showand was promptly introduced to Japan in September. We test drove the "4 Series". Previously known as the "3 Series Coupe," it was renamed the "4 Series" with its full model change, aligning with BMW's recent naming convention of using even numbers for coupe models.3 Series", it was renamed the "4 Series" with its full model change, aligning with BMW's recent naming convention of using even numbers for coupe models.BMW".

Compared to the current 3 Series, its styling has evolved into a wider and lower stance. This not only achieves a lower center of gravity—said to be the lowest among current BMW models—but also realizes BMW's ideal 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution. Additionally, safety features include the standard "Collision Warning with City Braking" that detects pedestrians.

The new "420i," introduced as an entry-grade model for the 4 Series, is equipped with the same 2-liter inline 4-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine as the previously introduced "428i." It delivers a maximum output of 135 kW (184 ps) at 5,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 270 Nm (27.5 kgm) from 1,250 to 4,500 rpm.

Furthermore, by adopting an 8-speed automatic sport transmission and an idling stop function, it achieves a fuel efficiency of 16.4 km/L. This makes it the first 4 Series model to be eligible for eco-car tax reductions, with a 100% exemption on acquisition tax and weight tax, and a 50% reduction on the following year's automobile tax.

The model lineup includes three types: "Sport," "Luxury," and "M Sport," which features the M Aerodynamics package developed by M. Prices range from 4.97 to 5.19 million yen, over 1 million yen less than the "428i."
