The 3 Series, positioned as BMW's most important vehicle, will evolve into its sixth generation. Since the debut of the first BMW 3 Series, known as the E21, in 1975, it has been 36 years. The full picture of this model, which has carried the backbone of BMW with over 12 million units sold worldwide, will soon be revealed.
While details have not been disclosed, it appears all gasoline engine models will feature turbochargers. The entry-level 316i is expected to launch in Germany with a price below 30,000 euros, and its engine's maximum output will reportedly be 100kW (136PS). Furthermore, the 320i is likely to have a maximum output of 135kW (184PS), and the 328i, 180kW (245PS). The top-tier gasoline model, the 335i, will feature a 3.0-liter inline-six twin-turbo engine producing a maximum output of 225kW (306PS). For diesel variants, which are now a mainstay in Europe, several grades are expected to be available with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, tuned to different specifications.
A hybrid variant is also on standby; the model, likely to be called the ActiveHybrid 3, is expected to be equipped with the same unit as the recently announced ActiveHybrid 5. The launch is scheduled for spring 2012 in the European market.
The world premiere of this new BMW 3 Series will be streamed live on the official BMW Group
Facebook page, starting at 4:00 PM German time on October 14 (12:00 AM Japan time on October 15).
It is scheduled to be broadcast.
