Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced that the 2011 model of the NISSAN GT-R will be released on November 17, 2010. Its key features include improved fuel efficiency while increasing maximum output. Another highlight is the "EGOIST," which allows for custom orders of interior colors and other options, akin to foreign luxury cars.

V6 Turbo Boasts 530ps Maximum Output with 8.6km/L Low Fuel Consumption

The 2011 model NISSAN GT-R continues to be equipped with a 3.8-liter V6 twin-turbo engine and a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission, as before. However, fuel efficiency has been improved to 8.6 km/L in the JC08 mode, enhancing its environmental performance. Simultaneously, maximum output has been increased to 390kW (530ps) at 6,400rpm, and maximum torque to 612Nm (62.5kgm) at 3,200-6,000rpm. Fuel economy is better, and power and torque have been enhanced.

For the 2011 model, fine-tuning has been applied in various areas with the aim of "improving driving performance." This includes enhanced body rigidity, improved tire load response, a more comfortable ride through the adoption of new dampers, the use of Nissan's proprietary thin, large-diameter brake rotors for increased braking power and fade resistance, and new tire compounds for improved straight-line stability on uneven surfaces. Furthermore, modifications to various body parts have reduced air resistance and further improved cooling efficiency for the engine, brakes, and exhaust.

Two Faces: The Ultimate Circuit Model and One Infused with Craftsmanship

Of particular note are the two versions offered, catering to different preferences. One is the "Club Track edition," a circuit-exclusive model recently sold in limited quantities. The other is the "EGOIST," which Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. promotes as "delivering the emotion of craftsmanship."

The EGOIST is described in the materials provided to the press as "a one-of-a-kind GT-R, crafted solely for each customer by master artisans with the finest skills." The leather interior, upholstered by Seton, a German company that handles interiors for world-renowned luxury car manufacturers, is particularly striking. Mizuno CVE emphasizes that owners should experience the world of top-tier artisans, including the meticulous process of carefully shaving parts to match the subtle variations in leather thickness for each piece. The interior leather can be chosen from a combination of four upper colors and ten lower colors. The seat surfaces can be finished with diamond-pattern quilting.

In the EGOIST, which incorporates the techniques of master craftsmen, the GT-R emblem on the steering boss is a Wajima Maki-e lacquerware piece created by a traditional artisan. The BOSE "Precision Sound System," custom-tuned to the owner's driving position, is also an essential feature for a "personal" GT-R.

The EGOIST incorporates carbon fiber for the rear spoiler, shared with the Spec-V, and "lightweight parts have been adopted elsewhere to balance the weight increase from the use of leather," according to the company. The lightweight forged aluminum wheels, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship, are also the same as those on the Spec-V, further emphasizing its luxurious nature.

The lineup includes the "Pure edition" (¥8,694,000), "Black edition" (¥9,033,000), "Premium edition" (¥9,450,000), "Spec V" (¥15,750,000), and the "EGOIST" (¥15,003,000).

A Transformation as Promised (2)

The Emotion of "Creating" a Car, Worthy of Transmission

"When we unveiled the GT-R in 2007, we promised to show you its true form three years later. This is that answer," said Kazutoshi Mizuno, Chief Vehicle Engineer (CVE) in charge of development, at the press conference held at Nissan Motor Corporation's Global Headquarters near Yokohama Station.

"What we aim for with the GT-R is the creation of emotion centered around the car. To provide that emotion to the driver, we believe it's important to convey how it is made. This includes the engine, which achieves combustion at 1,100℃ through improved cooling efficiency and the use of dedicated oil; the tires, designed to prevent loss of control even if they burst at 270 km/h on the Autobahn; the aerodynamics for faster cooling of the brake rotors; and the optimal load distribution to all four wheels through the drivetrain layout..."

Mizuno further explained that the "emotion of creation" he wants to convey to owners extends from the highly precise assembly by technicians certified as "Takumi" (master craftsmen) at the Tochigi plant, to having the car's "Customer Service Advisor," who serves as the point of contact, participate in test drives to understand the essence of the GT-R.

Time and Place Reserved Exclusively for the Customer

The Tochigi plant has also established a dedicated space for customers as a measure to enhance communication. Here, customers can sit on sofas and observe the "Takumi" at work on parts of their purchased car, such as the seats, dashboard, and other components they see daily. Unfortunately, direct handover of the completed vehicle, as seen in some foreign countries, is not possible due to vehicle registration procedures; delivery will be handled by dealers.

At the press conference, Mizuno addressed rumors of the GT-R's discontinuation circulating in some specialized magazines. "We plan to continue production for more than five years. We will also offer an upgrade kit to update the performance of existing GT-Rs. Our policy is to continue expanding the world of the GT-R," he stated.

However, some grade revisions are planned. Mizuno added, "We are considering stopping orders for the Spec-V around the summer of 2011 and aim to consolidate our focus on the EGOIST."
