The system employed here is known as a "parallel hybrid." It utilizes a 3.0-liter direct-injection V6 supercharged engine, similar to that found in the Audi S4, augmented by an assist motor. The engine alone produces a maximum output of 333 ps and a peak torque of 44.9 kgm. With the addition of a motor delivering 52 ps and 30.6 kgm, the total output reaches 374 ps and 59.1 kgm. The motor's assistance is utilized during initial acceleration from a standstill (up to 50 km/h) and during full acceleration.
This system achieves 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and a European combined fuel economy of 11.1 km/l. With the incorporation of an idling stop function and regenerative braking, fuel efficiency is improved by over 25% compared to the gasoline-powered Touareg V6, truly embodying a model that balances performance with environmental consciousness.
The hybrid module featured in this Touareg is characterized by its lightweight and compact design. It is slated for use in future hybrid versions of the Porsche Panamera, Cayenne, and Audi Q7, with all models scheduled for a simultaneous debut. The anticipated release date is set for 2010. The winds of hybrid technology are finally set to blow in earnest across Europe.
