The New Fairlady Z Finally Debuts in Japan
The new Nissan Fairlady Z, officially unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 19, was released nationwide on December 1.
A Fusion of "Z-ness" and "Newness"
Since the debut of its first generation in 1969, the Fairlady Z has sold approximately 1.7 million units globally and has been cherished as a representative Japanese sports car. The latest model was developed with the theme of "Newness"—born from the performance and design befitting a new era—based on the "high performance," "design," and "high value" factors that have defined "Z-ness" since the first generation.
Wheelbase Shortened by 100mm
"Everything for the Drive." As this development keyword suggests, the company pursued uncompromising car manufacturing to maximize the inherent enjoyment of a sports car and the joy it brings to life. This is clearly demonstrated by the body dimensions. While it's common for cars to grow larger with each model change, the new Z is 65mm shorter in length than the previous model. Conversely, the width has increased by approximately 30mm. Along with this, the wheelbase has been shortened by about 100mm, while the rear tread has been widened by 56mm. In other words, by adhering to the sports car theory of being shorter and wider, the basic dynamic performance and handling have been dramatically improved.
The changes in body size also contribute to achieving a sharper, more sports-car-like form. Combined with the shortened front and rear overhangs and the powerfully flared rear fenders, it creates a dynamic and imposing presence.
Power-to-Weight Ratio Improved from 4.7kg/ps to 4.4kg/ps
Efforts to reduce weight, which is even more crucial for a sports car than body size, have not been neglected. Specifically, aluminum materials are used for the engine hood, door panels, and back door. Furthermore, through the optimization of the vehicle structure, safety has been enhanced and equipment has been improved, while achieving a vehicle weight nearly equivalent to the previous model.
The engine is a 3.7-liter V6 unit (maximum output 336ps/7000rpm, maximum torque 37.2kgm/5200rpm), the same as that found in the Skyline Coupe. By adopting Nissan's proprietary VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) system, high output and low fuel consumption are achieved at a high level. Incidentally, the power-to-weight ratio has improved from the previous model's 4.7kg/ps to 4.4kg/ps.
Two transmission options are available: a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed automatic with manual mode. The 6-speed manual
is equipped with the Synchro Rev Control system, which automatically adjusts engine speed to the optimal level based on the driver's shift operation during gear changes. This system, a world-first for a manual transmission, essentially performs heel-and-toe downshifts for the driver. The 7-speed automatic features magnesium paddle shifters.
Prices Start from ¥3,632,500
The grade lineup consists of four models: the base model, the Version T with luxurious features such as electric power seats upholstered in leather and suede-like material and a BOSE sound system, the Version S with enhanced driving equipment including 19-inch wheels and 4-wheel aluminum caliper piston brakes, and the Version ST which combines the strengths of both. Prices range from ¥3,632,500 for the base grade (6MT) to ¥4,462,500 for the Version ST (7-speed AT).
