A Design That Masterfully Condenses the Appeal of Past Mustangs

The Mustang debuted on April 17, 1964, and will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year. Since the first model's introduction, over 9 million units have been produced, making it a flagship Ford model with fans worldwide. An event to announce the production model is scheduled for April 2014, its anniversary date.Fans Worldwide to Celebrate New Mustang and Its 50-Year Journey

This marks the sixth generation of the Mustang. While detailed information must wait until April of next year, let's examine the characteristics of this new sixth-generation model based on the initial announcement.

The new Mustang features a sculpted form that further enhances the muscularity of the current model. It adopts traditional design cues that make it instantly recognizable as a Mustang, such as the long-nose, short-deck proportions, the tri-bar rear combination lamps, the reverse-slanting "shark nose" front, and the "Galloping Horse" emblem at the center of the front grille.

This can be described as a modern evolution that builds upon Mustang's heritage and key design elements. It presents a powerful and sporty appearance that is unmistakably a new Mustang from any angle. As many Americans would say about the current model, "This design is killer" – it masterfully condenses the appeal of past Mustangs.

The interior retains the symmetrical cockpit design of the current model. Inspired by aircraft, the design is horizontal, with a hairline-finished metallic trim spanning the dashboard from end to end. A plate indicating the Mustang's birth year, 1964, is embedded on the passenger side.

While the round gauges and air vents echo the current model's aesthetic, the design offers many highlights, such as the center console that appears to overlap with the horizontal dashboard and the toggle switches next to the engine start button.

Furthermore, it incorporates Ford's advanced driver connectivity technologies: "MyFord Touch," which allows intuitive control of navigation and climate settings via a touchscreen monitor, and "SYNC," enabling wireless connection to mobile phones and portable audio devices. These features support a more comfortable and safer driving environment.

Also Features a 2.3-Liter Inline-4 Engine

The engine lineup, in addition to the V6 and V8 engines, will newly feature Ford's latest 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-4 turbo engine. This is the next-generation clean engine that combines power and environmental performance, which was also announced as a preview of the production model at the recentLA Auto ShowLA Auto Show as theLincoln MKCmodel.

The top-tier model, the "Mustang GT," will continue to be powered by a 5-liter V8 engine. This latest tuned V8 engine delivers a maximum output of 420 horsepower and 53.9 kgm of maximum torque.

Meanwhile, the new 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine produces a maximum output of 305 horsepower and 41.4 kgm of maximum torque. This new-generation high-performance unit surpasses the performance of the current 3.7-liter V6 engine (300 horsepower and 37.3 kgm maximum torque in US specifications).

In addition to a manual transmission, an automatic transmission with SelectShift will be available. This automatic transmission is equipped with paddle shifters on the steering wheel for the first time in a Mustang, allowing for a more sporty driving experience.

The suspension system has been newly developed for both the front and rear. The front features a MacPherson strut type with double ball joints, equipped with a new perimeter subframe that boasts high rigidity and light weight. The rear utilizes an integral-link independent suspension, newly incorporating aluminum materials for weight reduction.

Details will be revealed in April 2014, but like the current model, it is expected to be available in both coupe and convertible body styles. The sixth-generation Mustang, which reportedly surpasses the performance of the "BOSS 302" even in its standard model, is benchmarked against the "BOSS 302," a familiar high-performance version in the North American market. It is poised to be a model of great interest for sports car enthusiasts.
