Defender Welcomes New 8-Seater Family Model: The 130
On May 31, 2022, Land Rover announced the new 8-seater Defender 130.
The Top Model, Stretched in the Rear, Offers Comfortable Seating for Eight Across Three Rows
The Defender, which underwent a full model change in 2019 for the first time in 71 years, now introduces the Defender 130, its top model featuring three rows of seats for up to eight occupants.
To comfortably accommodate eight passengers, the rear has been extended by 340mm. In addition to the standard panoramic glass roof, a second sunroof above the third row creates an open and airy cabin without feeling cramped. The second and third rows feature stadium seating, gradually rising to provide improved visibility for rear passengers.
Entry and exit are made easy by sliding the second-row seats forward to create a wide opening for accessing the third row. Furthermore, a button press on the luggage space lowers the vehicle via the electronic air suspension, allowing for effortless loading of cargo. With the third-row seats in use, the luggage space offers a capacity of up to 389 liters. When the third row is folded, this expands to an impressive 1,329 liters.
Inside, the Defender 130 comes standard with the PiviPro infotainment system, featuring an 11.4-inch touchscreen, mirroring other Defender models. Additionally, befitting its flagship status, it debuts with an air purification system plus, incorporating NanoeX technology and a PM2.5 filter, also as standard equipment.
The "130" is powered by either a 3.0-liter inline-six gasoline engine or a 3.0-liter inline-six diesel engine, both incorporating a mild-hybrid system. Both powertrains are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission driving all four wheels.
The Defender's renowned off-road capability remains intact, thanks to the D7x aluminum monocoque architecture developed by Land Rover, achieving a torsional rigidity of 25kNm/deg. This structure boasts three times the strength of traditional body-on-frame designs.
The air suspension system offers up to 430mm of articulation. In off-road mode, it can raise the vehicle by 71.5mm at the front and 73.5mm at the rear, enabling it to overcome obstacles and traverse water up to 900mm deep. Off-road settings can be selected via the PiviPro touchscreen according to terrain. The vehicle also features a towing capacity of up to 3,000kg.
The introduction timing for the "130" in Japan has not yet been decided. We look forward to the arrival of this latest and largest Defender model in Japan.
