8-Speed Automatic Transmission Standard on All Models for Enhanced Performance

The Jeep Grand Cherokee, arguably the original SUV, has undergone a minor model change, featuring the latest 8-speed automatic transmission and a new interior, including an updated infotainment system. It is now poised to counter the increasingly prominent European SUVs.

Fiat Chrysler Japan will release a minor model change of Jeep's flagship model, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, starting Saturday, November 23rd.

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee features an 8-speed automatic transmission across all models, improving fuel efficiency. It also incorporates paddle shifters for a more engaging driving experience. Both the exterior and interior designs have been revised to convey a more premium image.

The most striking change in the exterior design is likely the slimmer headlight design. The bi-xenon headlights and LED clearance lamps, standard on all grades, lend a more stylish impression. The rear also sees design revisions, including new large LED taillights, a larger rear spoiler for improved aerodynamics, and a reshaped tailgate.

A notable feature of the interior design is the adoption of the new "Uconnect" infotainment system. Already well-received in the "Chrysler 300C," this system allows for intuitive control of audio, climate, and Bluetooth functions (hands-free calling, audio streaming) via an 8.4-inch touchscreen on the dashboard. Controls are also accessible via steering wheel buttons, enabling safe operation without removing hands from the wheel while driving.

Another new feature is the replacement of the traditional analog gauges with a new 7-inch LCD multi-view cluster display. The display offers an advanced and refined look, reminiscent of luxury models, rather than the rugged aesthetic previously associated with Jeep.

Air Suspension Optimizes Aerodynamics, Achieving Up to 8% Fuel Economy Improvement

In terms of powertrain, the previous 5-speed automatic has been replaced by a new 8-speed automatic transmission for all models, providing a luxury car-like feel. Furthermore, an "Eco Mode" optimizes shift timing to enhance fuel efficiency. At speeds above 84 km/h, the air suspension lowers the vehicle to optimize aerodynamics. These refinements have reportedly resulted in approximately an 8% fuel economy improvement for the 3.6-liter V6 engine models and about a 5% improvement for the 5.7-liter V8 engine models.

The name "Overland Summit," previously used for the top model, has been simplified to "Summit." Additionally, the high-performance "SRT8" variant of the Grand Cherokee, along with the Summit, now features adaptive bi-xenon headlights.

The SRT8, in particular, incorporates features and settings that contribute to dynamic driving, including a new electronic T-handle shifter, a launch control system, and a torque distribution bias of 30:70 (front:rear) in Track mode.

Not long ago, the term SUV or 4x4 model was almost synonymous with Jeep. With European luxury brands entering the SUV market and new entrants gaining prominence, it remains to be seen how far the original SUV, Jeep, can hold its ground against these emerging competitors, armed with its history, tradition, renowned off-road performance, and updated modern technology. The future market trends will be interesting to watch.
