Three Models Introduced

The third-generation BMW SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle), the new X5, which was announced in May and made its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, is now arriving in Japan.

The third-generation X5, now designated the F15 model after a full model change, measures 4,910mm in length, 1,940mm in width, and 1,760mm in height for the standard xDrive 35d model. Compared to the previous xDrive 35d, it is 50mm longer, 5mm wider, and 15mm lower, giving it a slightly more low-slung and wide stance. The wheelbase remains unchanged at 2,935mm.

The exterior incorporates design elements to improve aerodynamic performance, such as the Air Breathers behind the front wheels and Air Blades behind the D-pillars, achieving an impressive drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.31. The new design, where the kidney grille connects to the headlights, a feature also adopted in the 3 Series, is also new. Notably, the design of this new X5 was handled by Joji Nagashima, a Japanese designer at BMW's German headquarters.

The rear hatch continues to feature the two-part tailgate, with the upper section being electrically operated as standard. The luggage compartment has been expanded by 30 liters to 620 liters. Folding down the 40:20:40 split rear seats creates a vast space of up to 1,870 liters.

Three powertrain options will be available in Japan. The 'xDrive 35d' is equipped with a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder diesel engine featuring common-rail direct injection and a variable geometry turbocharger. Maximum output is increased by 10kW (13ps) to 190kW (258ps) at 4,000rpm, and maximum torque is improved by 20Nm to 560Nm (57.1kgm) at 1,500-3,000rpm. Fuel economy under the JC08 mode has also improved by 25% to 13.8km/ℓ, achieving the 'FY2015 Fuel Economy Standards +20%' target. It qualifies for eco-car tax reductions, with 100% exemption from acquisition tax and weight tax.

The 'xDrive 35i' is powered by a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with a twin-scroll turbocharger. It delivers a maximum output of 225kW (306ps) at 5,800rpm and a maximum torque of 400Nm (40.8kgm) at 1,200-5,000rpm. Acceleration from 0-100km/h is 6.5 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than the previous model, and European fuel economy has improved by 20%.

The most powerful model introduced this time is the 'xDrive 50i', equipped with a 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo engine. It features Valvetronic, which steplessly varies valve lift, delivering a maximum output of 330kW (450ps) at 5,500rpm and a maximum torque of 650Nm (66.3kgm) at 2,000-4,500rpm. This represents an approximately 10% increase in power compared to the previous model. Acceleration from 0-100km/h is also 0.5 seconds faster at 5.0 seconds, while fuel economy under the JC08 mode has improved by about 40% to 8.6km/ℓ.

All models will be right-hand drive only and paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Drive is via the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which electronically varies torque distribution between the front and rear axles.

Latest Safety Features and Fuel Efficiency Technologies

As BMW's latest model, the new X5 also features enhanced safety equipment through electronic systems.BMWThe 'Driving Assistant' system, which integrates three functions – 'Frontal Collision Warning' that monitors the road ahead with a camera and issues a warning if a collision is detected, 'Collision Warning and Mitigation Brake' that automatically applies the brakes to prevent accidents or reduce damage in case of an unavoidable collision, and 'Lane Departure Warning' that alerts the driver to unintended lane departures – is standard on all models except the entry-level 'xDrive 35d SE'.

It also includes a Top View function that displays images from the left and rear of the vehicle to aid in parking, and a Side View camera that shows a panoramic view of the front and sides of the vehicle, enhancing safety when exiting blind alleys or parking lots.

The 'BMW SOS Call' function, which automatically makes an emergency call via a 3G communication module, and 'BMW Teleservices' for quick and accurate maintenance, recently introduced in the 7 Series, 5 Series, and 3 Series, are also standard.

The vehicle is equipped with the latest fuel-saving technologies, including Eco Pro mode, engine auto start/stop, and brake energy recovery systems. Furthermore, new measures for improved fuel efficiency have been adopted, such as the coasting function, which disengages the transmission and engine when the accelerator is released above 50km/h in Eco Pro mode, and weight reduction through the use of magnesium alloys in structural components.

Two Available Lines

In addition to the standard model, the new X5 will offer two distinct lines:BMWthe 'xLine', featuring exterior equipment that emphasizes the powerful, active character inherent in BMW's X models, and the sporty 'M Sport', with aerodynamic parts and suspension tuned by BMW M GmbH.

The xLine offers two interior options: the modern 'Design Pure Excellence Interior' in Ivory and Atlas Grey, and the 'Design Pure Experience Interior' in Mocha and Black. Both feature exclusive Nappa leather interiors and leather-finished dashboards, creating a luxurious ambiance.

Pricing for the new X5 ranges from 7.92 to 8.80 million yen for the 3-liter inline 6-cylinder diesel 'xDrive 35d', 7.99 to 8.58 million yen for the 3-liter inline 6-cylinder gasoline 'xDrive 35i', and 10.69 to 11.85 million yen for the 4.4-liter V8 'xDrive 50i'. Sales begin November 16, and the vehicle will be on display at the Tokyo Motor Show starting November 23.
