The RS Model Lineup
Audi Japan has launched three "RS models," its sporty top-tier range, along with the "S model" for the SUV, the "Q5," marking the first S model for an SUV.
The lineup includes three "RS models"—the "RS 5 Cabriolet," "RS 6 Avant," and "RS 7 Sportback"—plus the "S Q5," based on the "Q5." The "RS 5 Cabriolet," "RS 6 Avant," and "S Q5" will go on sale October 8th, while the "RS 7 Sportback" will be available from January 2014.
The "RS models," representing Audi's top tier, are high-performance premium sports series developed and produced by Audi's wholly-owned subsidiary, "quattro GmbH."BMWIt might be easier to understand if compared to "AMG" at Mercedes or "M" at BMW.
Audi RS 6 Avant
The "RS 6 Avant" features the quattro all-wheel-drive system, offering all-weather dynamic performance combined with the practicality of a station wagon, making it an all-around premium sport model. It's powered by a 4-liter V8 twin-turbo engine delivering a maximum output of 560ps and peak torque of 700Nm (71.4kgm). As emphasized by Audi Japan President Hiroshi Okita during the announcement, the adoption of an aluminum body, achieving a 100kg weight reduction compared to the previous model, along with the Audi Cylinder on Demand system that deactivates four cylinders under light load and an energy recovery system, contribute to a fuel efficiency of 10.4 km/l under the JC08 mode (compared to 5.9 km/l for the previous model), while maintaining the same high performance.
The sophisticated quattro system uses a center differential with a locking mechanism, typically distributing torque 40:60 front to rear. In case of wheel slip, it can vary the distribution from 70:30 to 15:85 as needed. Additionally, the Audi Drive Select system offers four modes: COMFORT, DYNAMIC, AUTO, and INDIVIDUAL. This allows drivers to adjust steering feel and suspension damping to their preference and the driving situation, from dynamic handling to comfortable, natural steering.
Indeed, the new "RS 6 Avant" achieves exceptional performance, with 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 305 km/h (manufacturer's specification). It can be described as a premium sports model that expertly balances practicality, high driving dynamics, and the environmental performance demanded today.
Audi RS 7 Sportback
The "RS 7 Sportback" is based on the 5-door coupe-styled "A7" and, like the "RS 6 Avant," employs a 4-liter V8 twin-turbo engine. Its performance remains unchanged, with a maximum output of 560ps and peak torque of 700Nm (71.4kgm). The 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.9 seconds and fuel economy of 10.4 km/l under JC08 mode are also identical. Exclusive 21-inch alloy wheels enhance its sporty appearance, clearly differentiating it from the standard model.
Inside, both the "RS 6 Avant" and "RS 7 Sportback" feature carbon decorative panels and RS sport seats with a honeycomb pattern design for excellent support. The upholstery is a combination of luxurious Valcona leather. The leather-wrapped, 3-spoke multifunction sport steering wheel with paddle shifters bears the respective model names, signifying their special status.

RS 5 Cabriolet
The "RS 5 Cabriolet" is equipped with a 4.2-liter V8 direct-injection engine, inherited from the mid-engine flagship "R8," delivering a maximum output of 450ps and peak torque of 430Nm (43.8kgm). It offers smooth, responsive acceleration that can be enjoyed by revving the naturally aspirated engine to high RPMs.
Like other RS models, it features sport-tuned suspension and a sport differential that varies the drive torque to the inner rear wheel based on road conditions, achieving dynamic handling that belies its open-top nature.
The soft top can be opened or closed even while driving at speeds up to 50 km/h and is available in four colors offering excellent durability and sound insulation. It allows for effortless enjoyment of elegant open-air motoring while also catering to the desire for sporty driving.
SQ5
The first S model based on the SUV "Q5" is the "SQ5." The diesel model debuted last year at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.diesel modelThe gasoline model introduced this time was unveiled at this year's Detroit Auto Show.gasoline modelThis top model is expected to further boost the popularity of the "Q5" series, which has maintained strong sales in Japan since its launch.
Exterior highlights include a uniquely designed single-frame grille, a 30mm lower stance due to the sports suspension, and 20-inch wheels. The diffuser on the rear bumper and the rear spoiler also emphasize the S model's sporty character.
The interior differentiates itself from the stock model with sport seats combining Alcantara and leather, "SQ5" logos on the instrument cluster and steering wheel, and matte brushed aluminum decorative panels.
It is powered by a 3-liter V6 TFSI engine with a supercharger, producing a maximum output of 354ps and peak torque of 470Nm (47.9kgm). It is paired with an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission. The torque-vectoring function, which applies brakes to the inner rear wheels during cornering to prevent understeer, ensures both sportiness and stable driving.
Expanding the "RS models" and "S models" enhances Audi's presence in the premium sports car market.AudiWith its unique character, commitment to driving through the traditional quattro system, performance rivaling sports cars, and a blend of comfort and practicality, this lineup is sure to appeal to users seeking high-performance cars for daily use.
